I was just trying to run counter strike condition zero on lg s1 with ati radeon x1600 but the graphics seemed to be very poor for a gpu like this one.I decided to change the renderer setting from "software" to "open gl" or "d3d" but couldn't change as everytime I tried doing so vista came up with the error message that game could not be played in that video mode and the renderer setting gets reset to "software", btw could ther poor graphics be due to "software" rendering?

Don't know why it's not letting you choose, but yes its the software rendering thats the problem. Older games have this feature, the graphics rendering is done by the CPU and usually looks quite bad. It meant people with crap or business orientated computers could still play....usually albiet badly.

yeah software rendering means that it isn't using the x1600 to draw the graphics. normally the processor would be under a pretty heavy load anyway. combine that with the fact that it gets to draw all the graphics too. joy.

open gl and d3d are two different rendering path choices. both use the graphics card. use d3d if you are in windows on counter strike.
