My new notebook is an Asus M50Sv, with Realtek sound chip and Asus approved Realtek drivers, and my microphone is built in, and I just installed CSS on it.

When I go into "Options", and go to the "Audio" tab and change the "Speaker Configuration" setting from "2 Speakers" to "Headphones", and click "Apply" and then "OK," when I go back and look at the settings it's still set to "2 Speakers"!

Also, when I go to the voice tab, and adjust the "Voice transmit volume", and then click "Apply" and then "OK", when I return to the "Voice" tab the setting is back at full volume, and it will not remember any other setting!

I don't know if this is a hardware issue, a driver issue, or just a CSS issue.

Have you ever experienced or heard of such problems?

I'm reinstalling CSS right now; I'll post back weather it helped or not.

Can you help me out with this; any suggestions of ideas?

Thanks Forerunner, but I've already done that. I've tried at least five different audio drivers as of now, including the latest from Asus, and also from Realtek.

I now seem to be able to get the driver to recognize when I plug in my headphones, but the problems still persist in CSS. Maybe CSS itself just has some incompatibilities with this notebook. I've submitted my problem to Valve, and posted on their forum, but so far nothing.

One guy said to check and see if my config was set to read only. But I don't think so because all of my other setting changes stay set just fine.

I'm starting to think that it's more of a CSS incompatibility than a hardware or even a driver issue for the most part.

I wonder if anyone else has ever had this problem on a notebook before?

    UPDATE:

Just got off the phone with Asus Tech. They pointed out to me that CSS is a DX9 based game. He had me check my DX and I only had 10 installed, and not 9. He suggested that I install DX9 and see if that solves the problem. What do you think about this?

This sounds like a stinker. DirectX 10 supports basic backwards compatibility with DirectX 9 features, just as Direct X 9 supported backwards compatibility with DX8, which supported DX7, etc. While some games may whine if they don't see specific versions of the DX9 SDK installed (F.E.A.R. comes to mind) there's no reason that installing DX9 from the MS web site would change anything about how your computer functions.

Most likely our confused tech support friend was referring to the fact that DirectSound3D is no longer supported on Vista - not that installing DX9 would change that somehow.

This may be a stupid question, but do you have headphones plugged in when you try to change the setting? Some sound cards will see that you have no headphones plugged in and revert back to "2 speakers" (meaning your laptop's built-in ones).

    You're on Vista, right?

I have the same thing with my external USB speakers (logitech z-10s). Basically, source looks to vista's sound control panel and finds out what your sound setup is set up as. You change it to headphones, but if you look at the console it says "Sound setup detected stereo speakers" or somesuch. My headphones are plugged into the jack on the speakers, but it doesn't understand that.

Have to change what vista describes the speakers as.

Yeah, I've been trying with the headphones plugged in, and also with headphones selected as my output in my Realtek driver.

Someone on another forum suggested that I check my CSS config file to verify that it is not set to read only, but I don't know exactly where this file is located and what it is called.

What I did find is a config folder, and when I check properties for my config folder, it says that Read-only (Only applies to files in this folder). But when I deselect this box and click apply, the just revert back to this Read-only state.

OK, I found the right folder, steamapps>"account name">counter-strike source>cstrike>cfg, and there are two files inside, both set to Read-only. I deselected Read-only, but the problems still remain.

Well, I had this on CS 1.6 so......What you can do is uninstall reinstall blal bla bla. Update drivers or check if your microphones are getting plugged in.

I don't know if this is still a problem for the OP, but I can relate. The audio settings, specifically volumes for speakers and mic input always change everytime you close and reopen the game. After a time, you may find the mic volume to be almost 0. It's just a bug in the game. That kind of thing needs to be continually updated to suit your needs.

As for DX settings, that is only a concern if your game is experiencing visual tearing or you're lagging visually (make sure it's not your connection - type net_graph 3 into the console to check your choke/loss - this will show whether your connection is poor or your system is the problem). There is a console command for forcing an older version of Direct X to run the game if you feel that is the problem. It's also a console command, otherwise it'll default to DX 10 if that's what you have installed. If you want, let me know, and I can look it up for you.
