    Hello,
Nowadays there are more and more ultrabooks with dedicated GPUs, but they only have Intel U processors.
My question is: which processor is required for a GT 740m 2GB GPU to avoid CPU-limit in games:
    - Intel® Core™ i5-3337U Processor (3M Cache, up to 2.70 GHz)
    - Intel® Core™ i7-3537U Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz)

depends really on how good the cooling system is. but the i7 is going to be a bit better, often not worth it

and only U cpus are going to be in ultrabooks, thats how the specs goes

So you are implying that an i5 would draw back the gaming performance?

im implying that it wont matter much actually, the i7 is going to be bit better though.

but it all boils down if the cooling can handle it

and what games are you going to play?

So by cooling you mean if the cooling is inadequate will the performance get throttled?

As far as I am concerned he meant that :)

exactly, and given that usually those notebooks dont come with adequate cooling pay attention.

    For example: Metro: Last Light
    Bioshock Infinite
    Anno 2070

Sadly I can't really find any ultrabook with better performance, but I need one notebook in that size.
So are there still chances of playing with trade-offs?

I am in the same pickle as you. I want to get the new Acer R7 but it only comes with ULV cpu's even though its 1.1inches thick probably due to the 750m Gddr5

haswell will introduce 28w cpu, so there is a change that the cooling on that system can handle it.

but at any rate the rmbp 15 is the best on the thin and light with a lot of bang. the samsung series 7 with the 8870m throttles and so does the Q&A problematic asus U51vx/U500

if you are OS agnostic, its a good buy

PS: you wont find more power on the ulv cpus, they are ulv cpus afterall. and for strategy games the gain of minimum fps provided by a quad is very palpable, in BF3 as well

It's 5.3 lbs 1.1 inches thick, nothing special there. Do you really need touch? There's plenty of 15" non-touch laptops with 650m, soon 750m GPU's and full dual core or quad core CPU's for $1200 or less.

For games 740m will be marginal at 1080p anyhow and dual core ULV CPU will bottleneck newer games.

You are right, but I have wanted a convertible laptop for awhile. Lenovo Y500 looks great too except lack of optimus....

and weight, power, the use of sli and the problems along with it, the touchpad, the keyboard, the build quality...
