Is it illegal to crack a game even if u own a copy of it? like if i destroyed the game disc, can i download a crack and still be legal?
secondly, would a crack damage my computer in any way?
cheers

Well if it means you need to reinstall and the disk doesn't work so have to download first - yes
If installed but need cd to work then I think its more justified (as in a nocd crack)
secondly a crack won't damage anything but can be virus ridden
Hope this helps -
cool! thanks alot!

A backup is legal.
-
yeah its legal
-
like a no-cd crack
-
If you look on game copy worlds terms it says you may only dowload if you actually own the game
-
Illegal in the US and most countries.

If u got the original then its legal

No it's not, the crack itself is illegal.
-
even if it is illegal, who cares, you bought it do as you wish.

personal opinions aren't being debated a question was asked and it was answered incorrectly, so it was corrected

I think the thing is is that it technically is illegal, but if you get brought to trial, which is not going to happen, it'd be basically impossible to convict you, since you legally bought the game in the first place.
And no, I don't think a no CD crack itself is illegal. -
The no cd exe is not illegal, gamecopyworld and other sites supply them free.
As long as you OWN the game, you should be allowed to NOT use the dvd all the time... -
i don't think it is legal, i'm sure there is an agreement to NOT modify the game files, and by using a nocd exe or patch you have modified the core files of the game.

When did no-CD cracks come into play? The OP asked about cracks in general and judging from his post, seems he's taking about the "what if" scenario if he damaged the disc.
Well if you guys want to be nitpicky and stay 100% legal....
Just phone the game company up and explain the situation. I've damaged CDs/DVDs 3 times and called the company and had my CD/DVD replaced free of charge(in the case of Microsoft, they even paid shipping & handling).
I've never had a company tell me "oh you messed up your CD so it's your fault" so I'm guessing what I'm doing is legal >.> -
Everytime you install a commercial piece of software, that annoying End-User-License-Agreement pops up...
Sometimes, you can just click agree...other times, the publisher actually makes you scroll down the EULA (although you still don't have to read it) and then click agree...
You typically cannot install the software without agreeing...and if you read it closely, you agreed not to modify the software...applying a no cd crack modifies the software...it's illegal, and if they (software publisher) cared, they could take legal action against you...
I won't argue the various justifications for/against EULAs, and I won't claim that I haven't used no cd cracks...but it is illegal...
I just hating toting around discs with me...but it's a slippery slope, and I'll probably be stealing 700 billion US dollars of US tax payers' money soon, if I'm not careful... -

the cracks are not illegal to use, games are not illegal to backup, but the 2 combined (ie, using a no cd crack witha game) is illegal, but not under the piracy law. its illegal because its modifying the game files. even that could be disputed, since it wasnt YOU who modified the game files; all you did was run a new file that used the same resources.
however probability states that if you download games and/or cracks you download other illegal stuff (music, full games you dont own etc) they have enough proof to have you arrested and your computer searched just from the crack. -
