I didn't find anywhere good custom settings for Crysis for the XPS with 8700 SLI on board so I decided to prepare some settings by myself. You can download them bellow (the file has been updated).
Those settings give you the possibility to get ALL important DX10 graphics effects on the DELL XPS M1730 with dual GF 8700. Probably you will need just more RAM (4GB) as those settings turn off the texture streaming.
After applying those settings you should get without problem ~30-40FPS playing in 720p mode and looking really good!
With minor changes those settings should give great results on laps with 8800 SLI (all you should need to do is set a higher resolution and higher draw distance)
Below is the text file. I hope that it will help 8700 SLI users get the most of their hardware! I attached 2 screenshots for reference.
Update: Here is a movie I made showing my config running on my laptop. The video is a little bit dark dunno why but I think it shows how the game works on those settings. Everything is set to very high except some shadow and lighting settings which are custom but looking just like very high in my opinion. Here is the vid (updated): http://youtube.com/watch?v=KPFWUVLqUco
--------------------------------------------
CRYSIS - CUSTOM CONFIG (VERY HIGH SETTINGS with an average of ~30 to even 40 FPS!)
Config created especially for DELL XPS M1730 with 8700 SLI
With minor changes those settings should give great results on laps with 8800 SLI (all you should need to do is set a higher resolution and higher draw distance)
PLEASE NOTE! I take no responsability for any hardware problems which may occur after applying those settings! You do it on your own responsability!
1. WHAT YOU NEED
- DELL XPS M1730 with dual GeForce 8700GT, 4GB RAM (as in this config we turn off the texture streaming). The CPU doesn't matter (2.4Ghz is just OK)
- Forceware drivers version 175.63
- SLI mode on (obviously)
- RivaTuner
- Crysis - at least version 1.1 (the higher the better)
- Windows Vista and DirectX 10
2. CHANGE YOUR VIDEO SETTINGS
- Go to NVidia Control Panel
- Go to Display/Change flat panel scaling
- In point 2 choose the option "Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio
- Apply changes
- Restart your system to make sure those settings are working
3. OVERCLOCK YOUR VIDEO CARD
- Run RivaTuner
- In "Main" tab go to "Driver Settings" - click on the icon next to "Customize" and choose "System Settings".
- Set the Core clock to 750Mhz, Shader clock to 1500Mhz, Memory clock to 975Mhz
- Apply those settings
- In "Startup settings" make sure to check the tab applying the overclocking at Windows startup
- Click OK.
4. Run the game and go to your graphic advanced settings. Set everything to "Very High", apply changes and exit the game. In main settings make sure to set your resolution to
1280x720 (the image will be scaled with aspect ratio thanks to changes you made in the NVidia Control Panel). After doing so exit the game. PLEASE NOTE! You have to do it
BEFORE copying the files in this folder!
5. If you did what you had to do in the previous point now copy the files in this package to your Crysis game directory (probably x:\Program Fies\Electronic
Arts\Crytek\Crysis). Overwrite all existing files when asked (make sure to create a backup of those folders before!). The file system.cfg will not be present in this folder
before copying it so don't worry if you don't see this file in this folder.
6. Run the game
7. Make sure VSync and AA are set to "OFF" (those options should be set to OFF by default thanks to those custom settings but just make sure)
8. IMPORTANT! When you enter advanced settings you might see that some settings are set only to "High". You can change all settings which are set to "High" to "Very High" and
the game will still run smoothly! Just make sure that you don't change other settings (marked as "Set by user".
8. Start the game and enjoy! You should get an average of 30-40 FPS or more and the game should look awesome!

Ural try a higher res instead. SLI is CPU limited at such low resolutions and doesn´t work as hard as running in a higher res. 1440x900 you should be able to run it at.
-
-
Each higher resolution results in a drop of performance (about 10 or more %). Of course it is still playable but you can see that the framerate is a little bit lower. Playing in 1440x900 is indeed possible but the game is not as smooth and there is no big difference in image quality. Of course it might depend on drivers or SLI settings...
-
Yeah, download Nhancer and see if you get better fps. At that low res it is usually only one of your GPU´s working.
-
I had Nhancer before and now it also shows that SLI is working perfectly. You could also observe it by simply disabling SLI.
Anyway on my XPS this config works just fine and the game looks really good. Maybe I will post a vid later for comparison. -
Check out my youtube vid I made when I had the dual 8700m GT´s SLI. I ran Crysis with a custom config at 1680x1050
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lvp2h72H_pI -
But with what settings?
I have right now all set to high/very high - only shadow options are set to custom and the game works very well. Do you remember what were your settings? Or do you still have the custom system.cfg file? I wonder if you can see the difference between your settings and very high settings... Btw - I saw your movie before
-
So in performance, aside from my crippled CPU, the 8800m GTS should be fine to bump up the res, correct, as it out-performs the SLi 8700m GT's. Right now I am playing at 1280x768, all high, getting me 30+FPS. (DX9) Would raising the resolution cause a hit in performance?
Sorry to hijack the thread, Ural... But Magnus is sharp with this stuff, and I figured I would ask. -
why not just try it out?
-
I was, just wanted to see what he thought of it.
-
Definitely KGann, I could play smoothly at 1440x900 with my 8700m GT´s SLI. I think you should even be able to run it at DX10 if you use Vista. In Vista Crysis actually runs faster than running it in DX9 in Vista.
Do you have Crysis tweaked by the way? Tweaking can do a lot to the game and how it runs.
Sadly I don´t have that config on that youtube vid. -
Ok here is a movie I made showing my config running on my laptop. The video is a little bit dark dunno why but I think it shows how the game works on those settings. Everything is set to very high except some shadow and lighting settings which are custom but looking just like very high in my opinion. Here is the vid (updated): http://youtube.com/watch?v=KPFWUVLqUco.
UPDATE: I made some minor changes to the config and now the game runs in 30-40FPS (15-20% faster). Now you can also run the game in higher resolutions but be aware that it will cause a drop in framerate. -
I don't understand how can you guys get such high fps using 8700s. I've just tried following Ural's advice to the letter, but I'm still getting lower 15-20 fps on average. 10-15 using 1440x900 resolution. I m testing it the first level ("Contact", right after you destroy the jammer in the village)
The only thing that I've done differently is that I OCed it to 735 Mhz since anything higher than that gives me a lot of artificats and some weird noise on the screen (even after I quit the game to windows).
NHancer sli bar is almost full at aproximately 90-95 % so my SLI seems to be working. Also, I get 66-70 fps in the beggining of the first 3dMark06 1.1.0 test at 1280x1024 res (when they are still in the transport).
I also tried setting everything at high rather than very high and I got a 5 fps boost from that.
My system is M1730, 8700gt SLI, 4 gigs of RAM, T9300 @ 2.50Ghz CPU.
Thanks for the advice. -
-
-
As for the OS it's Vista Home Premium and I turned off Aero and the sidebar just in case it affects fps.
Also I had to reduce OCing even further (to 725MHz) after one of my cores just stopped working halving my FPS in Grid until I restarted my computer.
Also my GPU temps idle at 70C and they range 68C-79C during gaming (measured by CPUID HW monitor -tested for 2 hrs of playing Grid)
Thanks. -
thats impressive, good job.
-
Amazing results from Ural...
It's almost as good as my non-OCed 8800M GTX SLI... -
Finally Crysis has become quite playable for me. I've tried forcing dx9 with ural's custom config and it's a sucess - I get 25-50 fps (22-40 at night). Thanks Ural.
-
No problem glad I could help
.
-
This config works pretty well for the 8600m GT SLI laptops as well, such as my Toshiba X205-SLI3. I've got it overclocked to 615/900 which puts it pretty close to 8700m GT SLI.
The only problem remaining now with Crysis is that it isn't fun... at all. -
-
Hey do you need that exact forceware driver or can you just upgrade to the latest Ural?
-
EDIT: Disregard the "yellow" error.
Here's my real problem, I followed ALL the instructions in the first post and I still cant get FPS to be stable, I prob get like 10 FPS.
I just bought a new XPS M1730 core duo 2.5ghz 8700mgt SLI, 4gb ram
I updated to the new 175.32 beta drivers for the cards and they seem to work decently, if anyone has any suggestions for drivers on crysis please tell me.
Whats the command to check fps in console in crysis?
Thanks I hope I can resolve my issue. -
Misterzero:
Download FRAPS to check your FPS amount. Google for it. -
Sorry to bump up an old thread but as a new dell xps owner with the 8800GTX sli model i was very interested in your guide. Crysis runs pretty well on my machine but does suffer frame-rate issues on any res above 1440X900 with settings set to very high.
I'm a little hesitant to do the rivatuner stuff having read overclocking laptops is apparently a very bad idea... Since my model is the 2.5 non o/c option in the bios, can you confirm just how much risk to my laptop this would actually cause? if any?
Thanks for your help. -
First of all in the BIOS you can only overclock the CPU - which I wouldn't do cuz it wouldn't do much...
On the other hand overclocking the GPU in RivaTuner will help but make sure to do it by small steps (+5 to 10Mhz at time). Read on the forum how far you can go - it always depends on the config and the GPU... I would say 5-10% is safe. If after overclocking you see some glitches or artefacts on the screen go to your previous (lower) settings. Anyway if you do it right it should be safe. -
my thoughts on crysis...i couldnt get high enough to enjoy the story and gameplay..but im sure someone will create a mod making the game worth playing let alone buying...i regret buying the game...also my friend has the same laptop and only gets 20 fps on high...looks ok not like cod4 on ultra or bioshock on high...but it runs sooooo **** slow..It has graphics as good as the story line, If you think crysis is the future of system requirements then you must smoke crack, there are games that look better and play smoother, truth is crysis was pushed out by highly un skilled programmers taking advantage of every directx code in the book...ssao-pom-hdr-edgeaa-geom instancing--ect ect...but they simply added the features without optimizins ****, and the million confis show it, no other game has as many configs as crysis combined in the last 30 years of gaming...the game is and will always be known at least when other better looking titles come out, as programming by idiots...You watch, farcry will run like a dream, other tiles that come out in the next 3 years i bet will look better and run even better....so in short **** crysis, looks like **** even with ultra high configs considering it takes tri sli to achieve 40 fps avg on veryhigh...**** it...computing peice of crap
ps. I have owned it for a year or so, and im still on reckoning trying to get my moneys worth i have the ultra high config on, and i cant get drunk enough to have motivation to beat the stupid alien robot at the end..maybe i need to smoke crack to enjoy it, and even better: maybe i need peruvian cocaine to sniff, then using a ultra ultra ultra high config, and while getting a blowjob by carmen electra, aswell as ecxtasy in my system to enjoy the game enough to buy a 1900 dollar system of gpus tri 280 gtx, lol. .to funny but im being dead honest, cod4 is way better and the character models blow my mind, storyline took me in, i was impressed...crysis first thing i noticed was colorgrading, and sunrays lol thats it...next thing i noticed was unusually slow framerates, kinda like gta:sa enb series mod with everything set standard(crappy look and 20fps on loading screens)...I guess what i want to say, you a complete idiot to buy anything in a laptop more than a 8600mgt unless your a pro gamer in css ect...but even still 160fps isnt fast enough????lol **** crysis..goof *** game -
Hey, I'm having problems running it in DX9 mode. None of the water shows up, and there's this weird texture that looks like a dirt texture all across my screen if I look straight ahead, but if I look up it disappears. This doesn't happen in DX10 mode. Any insight?
-
Those screenshots do not look like very high at all.
-
Those screenshots were taken while I was still using lower custom settings. Didn't bother to update them. With the latest settings the game looks different.
-
Hi!!! I have an xps 2.4ghz with 8700sli... I tryed your configuration and procedure but Crysis warhead still VERY VERY SLOW! Impossible to play with this settings... what I did wrong?
I have a doubt... I have downloaded latest nvidia drivers from nvidia homepage in november and my version is: 175.32 forceware. Where you have found a driver newer than this in july?!?!?!?!?
thanks a lot!!!
Marco
P.s.: sorry for my bad english ..
