I have to say....WOW. With a 2720 i7 SB processor, 6970CF and 8 gig ram, I can play the original crysis as it was meant to be played; Sans last level (as almost any desktop can do either). I will chalk that up to bad coding.

I am about 75% through Crysis 2 on ultra with dx11 and 1.9 patch and have to say the original Crysis/Warhead is absolutely much more splendid to behold visually and from a sandbox and even physics point of view.

I can get lost in just shooting down trees, power punching shanty's and just being in awe of how technically advanced Crysis is. I do believe the new Crysis 2 looks great, but it has that scripted, modern warfare/DX9 feel to it. Obviously it was made with DX9 in mind but everything about it is very generic. DX11 hardly adds anything (especially if you read through that article I posted yesterday). I mean now we get handles on roadblocks and tessellated water on scenes without any! Interestingly, Crysis is STILL more taxing overall on my system than Crysis 2 with DX11 and 1.9. I do find DX11 to be much much more optimized than DX10 however.

It just amazes me that 4 years after a game is out, it still holds the crown of technical prowess and creativity. I remember John Carmack saying something to the like of, "With each new generation, graphical differences will be more subtle the closer things get to real life imagery and it makes complete sense. A great example is how subtle tessellation is in relatively fast paced shooter games. No one really can tell the difference between slightly raised edges with so much on screen. Quite honestly, the difference between DX9 (old) and DX11 on max settings is very very small.

Which I guess makes me wonder what the next generations of consoles will produce. Will we finally see the leap that makes Crysis look like Far Cry? Or are we a far cry from seeing Crysis on consoles?

Just some random thoughts. Would like to hear yours.

Yep, Crysis and Warhead are superior to Crysis 2 in pretty much every area. I'm still playing Crysis Wars to this day. I won't touch Crysis 2's mp, it's junk IMO.

Crysis has a much more "sandbox" and open gameplay feel to it plus a gorgeous local. Crysis 2 looks like crap and plays like crap.

Didn't crysis 2 MP completely flop due to lack of anticheat too?

I don't think the phrase "but can it run crysis" will ever die down. It was just that ground breaking and it's become embeded in gaming culture. If you can run crysis well then your E-peen automatically increases in length by 6 inches.

Crysis 2 is more intense and exciting to me, but Crysis and Warhead are more impressive to me.

It IS a major console port. You know things are bad when the game first game out, its title screen said "press start". Crytek had to "patch" that out.

Its a pity they never released the 'ultra config' that they promised.

I know you can get the same from custom configs, but it would be nice to have an official ultra settings in the menu.

I like Crysis, but my laptop can't handle the heat it generates (plus I could only play on the lowest settings). :\ One day I hope to get to play it how it was meant to be played. :)

Going back to play some original Crysis -- which is far better than it's console port sequel-- wondering what the really good mods are for graphics, etc.?

*I used to recommend Natural Mod, it was gorgeous and it's TOD change the game to what it should have been

What i always hated in Crysis was when you shot them in trhe head with a SCAR or ak-47 and their helmets would fly off. MAN that drove me up a wall.

    Every. Damn. Time.

The fact that Crysis is still one of the best looking games on the market for PC shows how stagnant and poor the PC gaming market really is these days though.

And Crytek are a bunch of sellouts. The whole lot of them.

While I will agree that crysis has graphics going for it... the only reason it was so resource hungry in the first place was BAD optimization.
Warhead was much more in line to how Crysis should have behaved performance-wise.

Anyone know of a place I can get a good deal on warhead; even if not on steam/origin. like I have said in previous postings, I have the disk but I don't have my CD key and EA is not giving out CD keys because of piracy. They even won't take a "picture" of my original disk because I "could have taken that from a friend." Worse case is I pay 20 bucks to get the game again but wouldn't mind getting a deal on the game. I am well through Crysis 1 again and 75-80% through Crysis 2. But Crysis 2 is like a mixture of playing a "Very pretty version of Modern warfare with broken play mechanics in a post apocalyptic world." Plus the nano suit sucks. I will say that the graphics are GOOD...just way less physics, completely linear, and I don't think anything replaces how amazing Crysis/Warhead are to play and look at considering it's a sandbox. I need me my Warhead again.

A great place to pick up games is Amazon digital download. Go here for Warhead

Amazon.com: Crysis Warhead [Download]: Video Games

Saves a few bucks and if your disk goes bad...you can always download it forever...

I your case...purchase it...and use the code that you get from Amazon with the disc...

Ask them if you can send them the physical disc and they replace it with one with a key? I mean what else are you supposed to do? I guess a receipt is always good, but people lose them.

Thank you! + Rep. 15 bucks is better than 20. Can I activate the product on Steam and keep in my steam library by any chance? I know what I am doing on my day off work today :)
edit: Good point I see the CD key. I am just going to cancel the download and use the disk for now. Like you said if something goes bad with the disk, I can always use this to download! Thanks again.

Interesting. I used the CD key I bought from amazon and when I put in my old warhead disk it said "cannot execute function. A security key is missing from this application. I am not going to bother troubleshooting. I am going to take this cursed freaking Warhead disk from my ex and throw it in the garbage :) Anyway, when i finish downloading from amazon can I activate the game through Steam like I did Metro2033 from gamersgate?

You don't need to actually download the game from the site you bought it from. You can just put in the key on Steam and download it from there.

No, you cannot activate non-Steam copies of Crysis on Steam. Only certain games allow you to do that.

Ya this game is sooo much more optimized than the original and it STILL was rushed. But i am enjoying it much more than Crysis 2. What a waste of Ultra settings and a high res texture pack. I can't believe how poorly that was implemented and rushed to PC market (no doubt my EA pressures). No one in their right coding mind would implement tessellation on city roads and tessellate water that was under the map. Just poor. For that game, I am just going to finish the game for the sake of finishing the series. But I could replay crysis 1/warhead all day.

Strange I am having a hard time getting Crysis (original) to play on my dekstop. It installs just fine without errors, but then it is just a black screen -- this goes for the patched and 1.21 patched versions on 3 different install attempts) any have any ideas.?

does anyone notice, no matter how many times you beat crysis warhead it remains just as fun as the first play through?

I must have beat that game 4 times start to finish, and still have the urge right now to play it some more. talk about replayability

crysis 2, i enjoyed alot. I beat it once and havent touched it since

all i have to say about crysis 2 is, i wish they used the powers from crysis 2 and put them into crysis warhead as well as the lighting and fire effects.

i think the graphics of crysis 2 do indeed look better, but theirs more to a game than graphics.

how many times have you people beat warhead, or am i alone?

    Godly,

I don't know if I think Crysis 2 graphics are better. The DX11 pack was implemented in an almost non-noticable way and I linked to the article that shows just how badly they chose to implement it (even in whole scenes where they tessellate objects NOT on screen). I think the game was catered to DX9 obviously and DX9 when properly optimized looks great. However when you have an open sandbox game, where every object practically has it's own physics and also amazing graphics to boot; Crysis gets the nod. I think that, like you said, certain elements of lighting and shading look great on the new engine. But overall, I think it was way more intricate on the first games. That is not to say the new engine isn't better; but we won't know unless they made the game with the PC in mind and then ported to consoles.

i still think crysis warhead looks the best out off all of them.

crysis 2 is def a dx9 game, and crysis is a dx10 game and they dont compare.

it was the detail that i cared about, every leaf had a detailed texture and in crysis 2 is just green without the texture. missing the finer details me thinks

Maxed out Witcher 2 may have dethroned Crysis, even if only from an art style perspective.

I dunno, I am running Crysis with the Natural Mod 2.0 w/ high rest texture pack from CCC and WOW. That being said it is modded to hell and back and W2 is not, but this is amazing. I forgot how much better the original was to the failed console port sequel.

    I don't agree with this.

The main reason it was resource hungry was the quality of graphics. Simple as that. People say it was poorly optimized but until you show me a game that looks better and runs 2x as fast I don't agree. It still looks amazing and the engine has much more to give than the default config.

Warhead just pulled in the draw distances etc and a few other minor tweaks, there was no major change in the engine code. Play Crysis on High and you can see small objects for quite a distance, play Warhead on High and there is tonnes of pop-up. It sacrificed visual quality for performance.

Crysis 2 runs a lot better but for me I can see the tricks and approximations. Flat backgrounds, flat surfaces, ridiculously shiney/flarey cars that don't even look vaguely photorealistic, worse motion blur, less realistic optical effects when looking through scope, the list goes on. If I look at the shadow of a tree it looks great in the middle of my screen but then changes to low quality at the edge of the screen, with a very obvious sharp line where it changes. Looks horrible and I see these kind of 'tricks' everywhere.

I've just downloaded and installed this new-ish mod for Crysis; the Extreme Immersion Mod.

DAMN!!!! It's almost like playing a new game. Check out the vids on youtube. It adds an added layer of difficulty by making the headbob more realistic, adds a hitbox to your character that effects how you see/move/shoot, depending on where you're getting shot, adds in a heartrate monitor that affects your aiming if you're pulse is racing, and adds a bunch of cool DOF effects, and tossed in the time of day mod, to make the lighting more natural.

I've been replaying the entire game and, it's outstanding.

Can get the mod here: Extreme Immersive Mod

While i agree that that mod looks impressive, it uses so much motion blur the dude looks like hes drunk. xD

I've tried a few mods and always go back to the original because I think something in the MOD is overdone and the original is overall; better. Is there a MOD in which the consensus is that it makes the game visually better than Vanilla Crysis?!

That immersion mod is awful. Anyone who has any knowledge of the brain knows that much of activity with sight has to do with stabilization so your visuals don't look like it's bobbing everywhere like a drunk.

Downright awful. I find claims of realism to be very false. Your eyes don't have lens flare (notice word lens). Your eyes don't create bloom or extreme blur or extreme DOF. As soon as your eyes look and focus from on object to another, it focuses instantaneously. Whereas in games no matter what you look, for example distance is always blurred and out of focus.

All this post processing is just garbage. It's not how your eyes see but how maybe an incompetent or drunk film maker would make everything appear with a movie camera.

    It's terrible.

Thats why I enjoy Crysis Vanilla and Crysis Warhead doesn't seem to have those crazy mods. I also find that even though they "optimize" they optimize for lower end hardware to try to emulate Very High settings but when you install the mod's it lowers performance when you set to Very High. I think if you have a mediocre system then some mods do tweak to get better performance and visuals instead of playing on Medium. But if you can play Very High....don't mess with it. IMO of course.

i dont know but some modds simply add to the game. like the particle mod, the palm tree mod, foliage mod, and the grass mod. how can adding better graphics be a bad thing to vanilla very high
