I'm looking for opinions on how current laptop cards stack up against a pair of Nvidia 285Ms, SLI'ed, stock clocks. From anything I've been able to find, it seems like the 660m would slightly underperform and the 670m would be a slight upgrade, but both seem like they would be completely solid sidegrade contenders, and it seems there's some performance fluctuations with updated drivers and the 660m catching up to the 670m. Am I completely off base here, or would this be about right? I'm looking for a more mobile version of my current laptop, and just want to make sure I'm not downgrading instead.

How much are you willing to spend? It is kind of pointless to spend money and replace your 285m SLI with the 660m or the 670m. The 675m and up will be an upgrade.

Well, my current price range is bound roughly by what I can get for my current laptop. I'm interested in basically a functionality sidegrade but a huge weight downgrade. I currently have a decked out M17x R2, it weighs close to 13lbs I believe with the options I have. I'm happy with the games I can play with it, and don't really plan to honestly be buying a lot more games, so if it can do what it can now, I'll be satisfied, but I'll be needing to move it around more for business reasons, so 13lbs + accessories is just not tenable. I was looking at something like the MSI GE70 0ND-033 as a replacement, and it checks in at just a hair under 6lbs, so more than half the weight trimmed off is very sexy.

IMO, that would be a very bad choice. Your laptop will have similar performance and all you will be doing is paying about a grand for a lighter laptop. I'd suggest you see how much you can get for your M17x and then decide what you want to purchase. Your rig is really good for its age.

OP you are correct. Based on Vantage, the GTX 670M will be 5-10% faster than your 285M SLI. Not much of an upgrade but there are pros to just using one GPU too. Don`t know if it justifies a purchase though. If you want a real upgrade you will have to buy 580M/675M, 6990M, 7970M or 680M

On the top of my head, 675M/580M is like 18-20% faster than 670M, 680M/7970M is like 45%ish over those two again. I don`t know what notebook you have: if it supports those GPUs, based on thermal (heat), MXM type, BIOS support and power supply.

Cloud, he is not trying to get a better GPU. His main goal is to have a lighter laptop. Please read through both his posts.

Well then just buy the GTX 670M. Thats one less GPU (and fan?). Have no idea about the weight of the notebooks containing this GPU.
I know you will find many lighter notebooks with GT650M though, which you maybe can overclock. Stock its probably around 20%ish slower than your 285M SLI. However if the notebook allows overclock (ie can withstand the extra heat) there is no point buying a notebook with 660M since you basicly get a 660M (since 650M and 660M are the same). 660M (650M overclocked) is probably around 5%ish slower than your 285M SLI
