Hey guys I'm using the most recent driver from the nvidia site right now for my 9800m gs on my asus g50vt-x5.
I've heard really good things about dox drivers and wondering if they are much better than the official drivers, and why.
I did a little research and found DOX is the guys name who makes these custom drivers, kinda reminds me of the omega drivers =p
anyway a little info would be appreciated,
thank you!

We do not need threads like this. Dox work for some and not for others. The only way to find out? Try it.
-
ok, sorry for asking =p
-
No prob, it will be a very slight difference, if any.

its fine to ask questions, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. i'm not sure if this has been answered before- sometimes it's easier to hunt for the answer than ask again. either way, you are fine.
DOX is highly overrated in my opinion, but some people swear by DOX's modified drivers.
in my opinion, drivers represent a security issue and you should be using drivers supplied by nvidia only. in addition, i have found in the past that DOX modified drivers don't really change performance. in my (infinite?) wisdom, i think you should just get the latest drivers from nvidia. -
Why don't we need threads like these? This is why NBR is a sort of support thread, right? What's the point if we're gonna not need them then?
Back to topic, DOX drivers are kinda like overclocking, in a way that some people could squeeze more performance from their cards than others. These drivers rarely fail miserably, except if you've downloaded them outside LV2G or known sources of the drivers. With modified drivers, you're risking running your hardware hotter than how it would with official drivers, but some do and some don't experience this problem. Although I explicitly disagree with mew, one thing I agree is that the only way to know how the driver performs in your system is to try it. -
I have found that while DOX drivers will improve performance, it makes your GPU temperatures increase. Some, however, will give you a performance boost without a temperature increase (trial and error).
Also in my experiences, DOX drivers generally offer better resolution support. -
I've had good experiences with DOX drivers on 8800M GTS. But the new 195.55 Nvidia drivers have exceed DOX last 185.55 driver. SO I'm using the Nvidia drivers.

I'd say DOX is out dated and should not be used anymore.
The 195.55 drivers are killer.

someone post some benchmarks!!!thanxx!!!

What do you guy mean 195.55 drivers?
these are the ones ive got

typed in my info..win 7, 9m series, sent me to this. should i try out the 195 drivers? where i get em yo? -
-
Ah, a beta. I'll try it out then, thanks

Using driver on Geforce 9200M GS and 8800M GTS. -
Dox 185.55 - 9408
195.55 - 9534 -
dox drivers were really good along time ago. I havent benched with them recently to see how much better they are then new optimized drivers. I know I had a problem with dox drivers in the past comming out of sleep. i guess its pretty common but doesnt effect everyone. the benchmarks were awesome at the time but I could not keep em without sleep mode. -
I tried out 195.55, not so good. Dragon Age crashed on me a lot so I went back to 186, no problems.
My 3dmark results seems unreliable so I can never get an accurate read. I can run it 5 times and it can be 500marks different from the last test.
My highest was 94xx, which should be good for my build =p -

For games (and a few other windows only activities), I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 (Windows 7 Server x64) on my macbook pro, which has a 9600m GT gddr3.
That means I have a choice to make about what graphics driver to use:
- manufacturer supplied (Apple supplies an aging nvidia driver, something like 160 or 170 series i don't remember)
- nvidia (195.55 is the latest beta)
- dox modified drivers
why my opinion is invalidated because of my laptop, i have no idea, but elaboration would be great. i stand by what i said. drivers get down and dirty with your OS and should be treated very carefully. Just as you wouldn't download software from a totally unknown source, you should be even MORE careful with drivers. Unless DOX drivers provided some serious benefits I think you should stick with Nvidia drivers. I've never found any significant benefits to using DOX's drivers when I experimented with them (a relatively long time ago, but i believe this is still true) -
Dox drivers are truly a YMMV case, some swear by them while others like masterchef341 find little to no benefit, however Dox started modifying the drivers some time before Nvidia saw fit to release official notebook releases so credit is due for the effort required.
In my case, I used Dox drivers for some time until Nvidia finally released a stable and decent performing set of drivers for my laptop. Although Dox has retired I don't think I'll lose too much sleep so long as Nvidia keep up the driver releases.
Current best drivers, DOX?
