Exactly. I'm actually still seeing MSI laptops with the i7-4720HQ and a GTX 965M, costing 100 Euros more than an actual i7-6700HQ with the 970M. It's probably because those laptops with the Haswell CPUs were never out of stock when people jumped for 6th gen CPU. The leftovers still cost just as much as their launch price.

Ok, this is kind of a necro but with the new information I'm hearing that the 1050 won't be available for laptops until January (much later than I wanted) the question is revived, so I feel an update is in order.

Originally my plan was to shop the holiday sales (mainly Black Friday and Cyber Monday and equivalent sales during that time) and get a Pascal. However, it looks like that may not be an option to get a Pascal for my ~$900 range, and further in discussions with the wife the idea of buying a laptop is postponed indefinitely at the moment, but still I wonder.

From my experience (albeit very limited) January/February doesn't seem like a good time of year to get a good deal. So if I were to get a laptop during the holiday sales I would likely get a 960M with good specs or possibly a 965M or 970M if I'm lucky, while in January I won't have the sales to help me get a good value. On the other hand, waiting until good sales happen again (April or June/July) could be an option, but with Volta just around the corner would I end up in pretty much the same situation I was this July? (there should be a pulling hair emote)

    Opinions?
