DDR3 vs DDR5?

Just wondering what are the performance increases going to DDR5 from DDR3. How much better would DDR5 memory perform in games than DDR3? By how much fps averagely?

If you guys got any questions ill answer them. Help is appreciated.

DDR5 doesn't exist. Can't compare. Fastest ram right now for laptops is DDR3 1866 mhz.

In any event, it's impossible to quantify something like that into a number of FPS. Way too many variables.

 

Memory type by itself is meaningless. The important measurement is memory bandwidth and there is no quantificable way of measuring game performance because the effects of memory badnwidth are limited to things like texture fillrate, resolution, Anti aliasing etc and not directly to the actual game's geometry, shading etc.


Memory type, memory speed and memory bus width are all required to determine if its better or not. You can have insanely high clocled DDR3 with a very wide bus and totally outperform a generic GDDR5 memory type with smaller bus.

For example, the GTX260m is a 256bit GDDR3 card with higher memory bandwidth than the GTX460m with 192bit bus and GDDR5. That doesn't mean that the GTX260m performs any better at all as it is slower in everything than the GTX460m

 

9/10 times GDDR5 will result in a faster card. But you have to look at total bandwidth based on GPU clock speed, bus width, memory clock speed, shader clock and number of shaders, etc.

 

GDDR5 > GDDR3, but that might not translate into an increase in game performance. For the higher end cards, it makes sense to go with GDDR5 since the GPU is actually strong enough to warrant the extra memory performance. Faster memory doesn't mean anything if the GPU isn't capable of processing enough data to actually use the extra memory performance.

One other thing you should know, is that GDDR5 has twice the data rate of GDDR3 which essentially means that a 128-bit butwith GDDR5, performs like a 256-bit bus with GDDR3 all else being equal.

 

There are laptop graphics cards (like 5850M), which have been released with either GDDR3 or GDDR5. Because GDDR5 offers double memory throughput than GDDR3 (providing the same clock ahd interface width - 128 bit with 5850M), the card equipped with the GDDR5 will be faster than the one with GDDR3, usually by a margin of ~30%.

I wonder, will 256-bit 1000MHz (effective 2000) DDR3 perform the same as 256-bit 500MHz (effective 2000) DDR5?

 

Mostly, the DDR3 will be slightly better due to latencies.

All other things being equal, GDDR5 will outperform DDR3.
