    Hi there guys, i'm still on the hunt for a new gaming laptop and i'm starting to narrow it down a lot.

    2 Laptops both offering the ' 512MB Nvidia 8600M GT' graphics card.

    One is DDRII and the other is DDRIII, i know DDRIII is better but i have no idea why and how much better it is?

    If anyone could give me an insight into the differences that would be great! :)

    Thanks,
    Pete

    I highly doubts there is a laptop with 512MB GDDR3 8600M GT.

    But the GDDR3 will perform 20-100% better, depending on the resolution

    PS: If a software reports that the card has DDR3 memory, it has DDR2 memory. If it reports GDDR3, then it's GDDR3

    @JCMS:
    I think there is a mistake in the values you give, the GDRRIII is only 10-20%, not 20-100%.

    Ok here is the company. Very well established UK company called MESHcomputers, but they are selling the MSI laptops:

    15" MSI GX600 Extreme:

    17" MSI GX700 Extreme

    They certainly state that it is DDRIII:

    Is this the new 15" MSI notebook being released? There's a good chance that might be the first 15" 8600GT with 512 MB GDDR3 video memory. I can't be sure though since to date no other laptop maker stocks 512MB GDDR3 variants of the 8600GT, especially not with the upcoming alienware 15" and its new 8800 card.

    Well i don't know if its just me but i have noticed a couple of companies in the UK already selling Gaming Laptops with the 8800 card in, beating alienware to the finish.
    They are both under notebookreview's 'clevo/sager reseller list' but are also very well known in the UK.

    RockDirect xtreme 770:
    http://www.rockdirect.com/viewNotebook.php?pName=XTREME%20770

    Evesham Zieo NX680-HDX:
    http://www.evesham.com/products/info.asp?e=F2FBE0BA-A6F3-4F3C-AAEF-00BCBCACF336

    They look like the same laptop and i guess that they are but 'rock are proud to be the first company in the UK to sell the 8800 card in a laptop'

    Shipping in December for the Christmas purchasing boom. I think I remember a post recently stating that the UK would be the first to see the 15" 8800 laptops.

    Hummmmmm is that right? The Evesham has the 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo X7900 Extreme??? Well that in itself isnt impressive, but the fact is it seems to be all in for £1,999 definatly is. Wow. I will have to investigate furthur.

    EDIT: Holy hell batman. That's a VERY impressive specification for the money, infact it goes beyond impressive. Im trying to find out if its April 1st or Evesham's website has been hacked, or Evesham are somehow connected to the Mafia. Eitherway its putting my order with ROCK in serious jepardy,

    EDIT EDIT: On the topic title, I do not believe that DDR3 vs DDR2 at the same clock speeds would give ANY performance increase at all. Isnt DDR3 higher latancy?

    Sadly I can quite gernetee you the MSI GX600 and 700 are both DDR2 512s. Long story short, listed detailed specs are borked to hell and back twice over.

    Also, while they have 2 ram slots, they dont officaly(and possibly actually) support more than 2gb of ram. Yes, theyre santa rosa... This is a huge emberissment imo.

    Also, bluetooth intergreated is NOT avalible, at all. The details on this are a bit scetchy but basicaly equate to MSI messed something up mostlikely.

    On the other hand the GX600 is only ~1.2in thick, can overclock and DOES have 8600gt in it... and features decent battery life with an extended battery to come. Which should make it even more impressive yet.

    Oh, yeah, and so far they refuse to package Vista/XP 64bit with it to my iritation... There may be some question as to compatibility with the overclock ciricuit... *sighs*
    (Oh yes, and i should note it DOES have 4 usb ports... some detailed specs read 3, some 4. Its actualy 4 according to xotics who finaly opened up a box and looked at one.)

    If you go at a resolution higher than 1280x1024, it's that big.

    Overclocking my DDR2 card from 400 to 500 mhz gives a 20% boost at 1680x1050 in most games I play. The GDDR3 is running a 700. I have a desktop with a 8600GT GDDR3 and a Sempron 3100+ and it gets better perf than my laptop.

    @sgtMatt1: The G1S has 256MB of memoy :)

    The MSI GX all have 512MB DDR2, except the GX610 that has a GDDR3 HD 2600

    @JCMS:
    Do you have any benchmark showing the 100% increase in performance with GDDR3 in comparison with the DDR2? Remember that the clock speed is not a benchmark, the FPS in a game or the not so clear synthetic 3DMark are better references.

    hmm let's see, nvidia lineup being refreshed, 8600gt rebadged to 9500gs, possibility for 512gddr3, altogether there's a big chance for a reaaaaaaally powerful 14.1" and modest 15.4"...

    i have a question.
    would it make a huge difference on 3D model visualization?
    The software requires openGL2.1 and Shader model 4.0
    i'm deciding between two laptops a 1520 and a xps m1530, both with 8600m GT
    but 1520 uses DDRII 256MB vRam, and m1530 uses DDRIII.

    the software i would be using is accelrys discovery studio client and CATIA, AutoCAD.

    would DDRIII matters alot on these software performance?

    thanks alot

    Hi, JCMS
    do you mean the vRam or just the DDR Ram??

    in my region i can buy either 1520 or m1530.
    1520 with 8600m GT 256MB DDRII vRAM
    m1530 with 8600m GT 256MB DDRIII vRAM

    buy 1520 i can customize LCD to resolution up to 1680x1050
    1520 i can only get 1280*800
    which one do you think i should get?
