I guess some group called DERP are DDoS'ing Steam and Origin, they are down... Why? Oh why?

    http://www.tweaktown.com/news/34601/derp-takes-down-ea-login-origin-is-not-working-at-all/index.html

They said " We've directed the Gaben Laser Beam @ the EA login servers. Origin #offline"

So it seems they've tied Steam and EA Origin together somehow.

If you want to see what the group is doing just peek at their twitter page:

    https://twitter.com/DerpTrolling

The plot thickens. It seems "chFtheCat" is responsible for taking down Steam because they don't like what DerpTrolling is doing? lol. What a waste of everyone's time and resources.

Its been screwed up for hours.
But its also been unreliable for the last week.
Unable to sell or buy cards before they expire, this is bad.

The issue was that steam was extremely fragile even before this attack, a good % of the time half the stuff didn't work regardless.

They are not even hackers. They probably have 0 knowledge in DDOS attacks.
All these groups do is purchase attacks from operators running botnets. Which is actually really cheap compared to the damage they will cause their targets.

Anonymous is another example that just used a piece of software made by a security group, get a ton of people to support anonymous to use their bandwidth to bring servers down. A simple click here and there and you are ready to go.

Ah yea, the low orbiting ion cannon attack. good times. It is sad to see the current state of these once promising groups. Most of the original members have been arrested or turned government witness. The kiddies that are left seem to enjoy taking down gaming websites as their preferred method of 'protest'

I wonder if it's being done by hardcore anti-DRM types who are trying to make a point about DRM by preventing other gamers from playing games involving these services (that in part are DRM mechanisms).

There's nothing wrong with DRM when it's behind a platform that provides value, Steam definitely meets that bar.

I don't think they are after DRM though. They DDosed online/standalone games too (EVE, Runescape, LoL, Minecraft).

AFAIK they are using a modded version of LOIC (Low Orbit Ion Cannon, a DDosing application) on a Norwegian botnet composed of 500+ servers to launch their attacks.

I have no interest in looking through any of that, but internet vigilantism is dumb even if that happens to be the right guy.

So if you found pertinent information about a criminal you wouldn't forward it to the authorities?

I wouldn't say so, internet vigilantes have had a good history of putting twisted and sick people to prison.

Recent case: Two teens found guilty in Steubenville rape case - CNN.com. Also, I remember some other rapers, people like this kid in question, animal abusers, etc.

Can't depend on these sort of people all the time, of course, though I don't see a problem with it when they get the right guy.

Right. I don't condone users take punishment into their own hands, but providing information is fine with me.

Sure, but that certainly wasn't what he was doing. Posting that information was nothing but an implied invitation for someone to do something dumb.

Perhaps he meant to send it to the FBI's tip hotline and somehow clicked on a very wrong sequence of buttons resulting it it ending up on a forum for hardware enthusiasts. I guess that could happen.

How do you know it's the right guy? The internet has a very low burden of proof and more often than not crucifies someone innocent.

Only problem with that is the information was most likely obtained illegally, so by providing it to the authorities, you are giving them the necessary evidence to prosecute you as well.

What? So if I give the cops or fbi that info I will go to jail? What?

Or are you assuming the person smart enough to get this info, will be dumb enough to admit to hacking computer systems, instead of just posting it so someone else can report it?
