Anyone else looking forward to this game?

The more I learn about it the more my interest is piqued.

It's a stealth/action first person game set in a steampunk city that runs on whale oil, and the protagonist is an assassin with some sort of magical plasmid powers, including the ability to slow time, teleport and even possess enemies, with the player controlling the NPC.

One of the devs mentioned that you can complete the entire game without killing any enemies, even though you are playing an assassin.

The game world seems to be pretty large and relatively open world.

The developer, Arkane Studios, was recently acquired by Bethesda and includes many of the folks who worked on Deus Ex, Thief, Bioshock 1 and 2, Arx Fatalis.

Release Date: Oct 9 2012 (North America) / October 12 (Europe)

There are a lot of games set in steampunk environments?

Other than Bioshock Infinite, I'm not familiar with any new ones.

I'd just like to point out that NPC stands for "non-player character"...so your statement is self-contradictory. :p

Ok, I'm done being a grammar nazi.

No, it is a sort of possession power, like the mind control crossbow bolt in RAGE.

So for a brief period, the player controls a non-player character, and then goes back to controlling the protagonist.

When you get to the "magical plasmid powers" of the introduction, I start to get a bit skeptical. The art direction doesn't help either. But I'm intrigued by the assertion that you can beat it without killing - that shows some potential. Sounds like something worth watching.

What is it about the art direction that you disliked?

As for the "magical plasmid powers" - sorry, I made that phrase up. :p

The devs haven't really explained much about these powers, but they sounded a bit like the Bioshock plasmids IMO.

It looks overly polished and cartoony to me, though of course that's purely my own opinion from a few seconds of exposure to a few screenshots of a game that's not even out yet.

I was pretty sure the phrase "magical plasmid powers" wasn't in the marketing for the game, but I'm referring more to the inclusion of such abilities in the game at all. Bioshock was fun, but it's more arcade-y than stealth action, and your description sounds a lot like Bioshock (and the art direction looks fairly 'aboveground Victorian Bioshock' as well). Of course, it's nice to have some kinds of powers in a stealth action RPG, but too much cheapens the experience.

IMO the art style falls a bit more on the Impressionist side of the spectrum, kind of painterly rather than cartoonish, but I understand where you're coming from, in the sense that it's certainly not naturalistic.

I really liked some of the following imagery:

The artistic style for the settings seems questionable for anything involving stealth since they're mostly bright (as is the lighting), but they're alright. The cartoonishness I was referring to was in reference to the characters - features are too round and exaggerated, and the textures also add to the cartoonish effect on the characters, maybe because the colors are just a bit too bright. The special effects distortion looks quite cartoonish as well. The word that most comes to mind for the characters is "Dickensian".

On the violently-raging debate of NPC's, if the player character takes control of another character during the course of the game through some kind of mind-control power, that doesn't qualify the secondary character to be anything other than an NPC. After all, within the paradigm of the game, the PC is controlling the NPC, so you're technically controlling how the PC controls the NPC, rather than directly controlling the NPC. If you consider them anything other than NPC's, the nomenclature of Player Character and Non-Player Character breaks down.

I don't think the game can be classified as an RPG at all.
Its a first person stealth, action-adventure type of game.

More like a variation on a first person shooter - which is something I don't particularly enjoy.
Still, it seems intriguing from a certain point of view, hence I might be inclined to try it out.

Yeah, it looks pretty cool! I didn't know some of the 'Thief' people were behind it though that explains the general feel of the release trailler :)

By the way, you might want to look into this if you're into steampunk, moviemarketing (you might be disappointed though)

Great new Dishonored preview on Rock Paper Shotgun shows how you can tackle the same mission with a stealth or violent approach for a mission in The Golden Cat, a knocking shop for the wealthier denizens of the plague-stricken, authoritarian city of Dunwall.

Inside this cathouse are two targets, the Pendleton Twins. They are members of parliament, they are apparently corrupt, and they stand with the Lord Regent – new ruler of Dunwall, who has framed you for the murder of the Empress.

Loving the art, steampunk look and the stealth aspects. But if this is another FPS-heavy game, I'm going to skip it until I have more experience in that genre.

You can complete the entire game without killing anyone.

Or you can use only supernatural powers, unarmed combat or melee weapons and never touch a gun if you like.

Nice find! +Rep for you :)

I'm cool with stealth + powers + melee to finish the game.

sucks that it's not open world and its mission after mission, it's just gonna be like a COD game with superpowers and stealth based gameplay which should still be fun.

Im looking forward to AC 3 and Far Cry 3 instead. Watchdog looks better too.

Man, props OP. I've been watching articles about this but never looked too far into it. This looks fantastic!

It's like a new take on Thief, I like it.

Sorry for the confusion - at first it was announced as Q2, but now it is confirmed as October 9 for US/Canada and October 12 for Europe. (not sure about ROW)

I asked one of the moderators to change the topic title for us a while back, but they haven't responded, so I asked Charles Jefferies today.

Eurogame has posted a great new interview with Victor Antonov. He discusses his work on Dishonored as Visual Design Director and his previous projects including Half Life 2 and the animated film Renaissance.

It looks so good. Like Splinter Cell + Assassins Creed + steampunk.

    Great find!
