Does anyone know when Laptops will start being able to use Directx 10?

Because I was thinking about buying a new gaming laptop, but if it doesn't support Directx 10 then there is no point if it will be supported ona new machine soon.

Well, nVidia will be able to get some of its DX10 8 series graphics cards out by the time Santa Rosa is released, which is sometime in May. So, waiting for that will be a good idea. The time taken for manufacturers to actually get these cards into notebooks is a slightly different matter. Some have announced notebooks with DX10 cards planned, but they will take some time to get to market. The prices may also be a little on the high side, but eventually, they will decrease.

So would you suggest waiting to buy my Notebook? Or just go ahead and get one within the next few months. (Plus, my budget is $2,000. So if these directx 10 notebooks did come out, I think I'd be SoL anyway)

Santa Rosa is coming early May ... sources say May 8-9, but we can't confirm that as a fact. Nvidia promised that it'd have DX10 cards ready for that release, so ... it's not that long of a wait.

With $2000, you could probably purchase a good Santa Rosa system, with a dedicated DX10 card. It may take a while before manufacturers have a good number of notebooks with Santa Rosa and DX10 on the market, but since the release is so close, I would suggest to wait and see if you can purchase a new system. Also, older technology normally goes down in price a good amount when newer technology, like Santa Rosa and DX10, comes out.

As always, the best suggestion is to "wait as long as you can, and no longer". The longer you wait, the more you'll be able to get for your money.
But the moment you need a notebook, it doesn't really matter what's coming next month. Not if you need it now.

So buy the best you can get/afford at the time when you need to get a laptop. And don't buy it if you're content to wait.

There's always something new and better coming up, so if you make a habit of waiting for the next big thing, you'll never ever get your laptop. Decide how long you're willing to wait, and then wait exactly that long.
Only you can decide if it's worth waiting for feature X. If you need that feature, then yes, it's probably worth waiting for it. If you don't need it? Well, you'll have to decide that.

But take a look at how many DX10 games have been announced. I can count 3-4 that are able to take advantage of DX10, and 0 that *need* DX10. So it's not like a DX9 GPU is going to become useless.

    Hi all, first post here.

Toshiba has announced a 17' notebook with a 512mb go8600 card, i wonder if the same card will come in a 15,4' form factor ?

doesn't have to be a toshiba, i just wonder about the heat issues in putting it into a smaller casing.

In fact i was hoping Sony to release a new FS with this card, and wsxga+ res.

Asus will definitely put the Go 8600 into several notebooks -

    - The A8J series (14.1", ~$1600)
    - The VX2 (15.4", ~$3000)
    - The G1 (15.4", ~$2000)

Asus may possibly put the Go 8600 into the V1J (~$2000), and they might update their W2's (~$2500) to the Go 8600. Their smaller notebooks, like the W7 (~$1500) or the V2J (~$1800) might upgrade to a Go 8400.

You 100% sure about those? Coz that make me want to get something more powerful than a 8600... I remember a few months ago I heard someone said there will be a 17" Toshiba with a 8700... Can't wait for DX10 mobiles...>_<

Well there is already a DX10.1 in the works so these yet to be released parts are already outdated. Although, I believe ATI mentioned that their parts might be DX10.1 compatible, although I'm not sure the standard has been formally set yet, so you could wait for ATI's parts or nVidia's response or the eventual 55nm shrinks and TSMC has already said they would have 45nm production up and running by the middle of 2007 for ATI and nVidia...

Well, here is what S3 is announcing in terms of therm DX10 and DX10.1 chips.

    http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35932

The say that DX10.1 isn't expected to be released until the end of 2007. Probably with Vista SP1 so it's still a ways off. nVidia chips appear to not support DX10.1, but ATI's first gen ones may.

    http://www.vr-zone.com/index.php?i=4838

ATI is also planning dedicated mobile DX10.1 chips to be released in the first half of 2008.

Interesting... But when is ATI going to release their new GPUs for desktops or laptops? I was hoping to get an ATI card a few months later but they are still not coming out for some reason... :( Any news everyone?

ATI should be close to releasing their cards for the desktop market. Apparently they will be releasing at the end of this month, with some very good specifications. Mobile cards may take much longer to release, because ATi is just getting ready to lanuch the desktop verisions.
