    Are there any?

Feeling nostalgic, I'm looking for some DOS games to play on my EEE PC with an emulator. Are there any old games that are still worth playing today?

And a slightly related question: how does Starcraft and the Brood War expansion hold up these days? I bought it a while ago but never played it. Is that worth installing?

Master of Orion, Panzer General...hell, even the original Castle Wolfenstein would run! Lots of the Ultima series, probably even the VGA versions of Kings Quest, Space Quest, & Leisure Suit Larry games.

With the DOS games, it really was about the games, rather than graphics.

Crusader: No remorse and Crusader: No regret are still one of the few games that make me wish my current laptop has a proper numeric keypad.

All of the lucas arts adventures like monkey island, indiana jones and loom. They work great with the ScummVM emulator, even on a PS3.

Terra Nova. That game screams for a proper remake.

    The Crusader games also.

I remember JetFighter 3. Great jet sim/game before Jetfighter became utter arcade.

Oh the days of codewheels. Still remember Hardball 3 had one the size of a bike tire. Why don't they just do away with DRM and go for the codewheels again

Here're my two cents - Betrayal At Krondor. I've finished it (quite literally, and exactly) twenty times now.

Also could possibly look at King's Bounty. Ahh, the good ole days.

Or, if your memory stretches that far back... Akalabeth? Though you'd probably get more enjoyment out of the Ultima series.

Star Trek titles such as 'TNG A final unity', '25th university' and 'Judgment Rites' ... come to mind.

I really wish that games with current graphics had similar substance.
Trek did ok on PC in DOS days, and with some of it's newer titles ... but ultimately, they focused too much on the action and all while negating the adventure aspect of the genre.

I think a game that combines aspects of A final unity, Bridge commander and BOTF for example would be good.
Similar to Mass effect, making it in a 3rd person perspective when away missions are involved.

A lot of old DOS games are mistakenly considered Abandonware just because they're old. This is not the case.

Some of my favorite DOS games (most of which are not abandonware and are illegal to distribute):

    Castles 2
Conflict: Middle East Political Simulator (abandonware)
    Death Rally
    Descent
    Hidden Agenda (abandonware)
    One Must Fall 2097
Star Control 2 (opensource rerelease available)
    Terminal Velocity
    X-Com: UFO Defense
    all the Sierra/LucasArts adventure games

    I've forgotten many.

    Platformers

    Abuse
Blackthorne (one of Blizzard's first on the PC)

    Adventure

    Bioforge (Origin)
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
    Full Throttle (LucasArts)
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (LucasArts)

    FPS

    Descent
    Doom
    Heretic
    Duke Nukem 3D
    Dark Forces
    Magic Carpet
    System Shock
Terra Nova (Looking Glass...they made Ultima Underworld, too)

    RTS

Hard to go back and play these after you're used to modern interfaces...

Command and Conquer (cutscenes still worth watching)
    Dune 2
    Warcraft
    Z

    Strategy

    Master of Magic
    Master of Orion
    Panzer General
    Steel Panthers
    X-Com

And Syndicate and Crusader (No Remorse or No Regret) are a bit difficult to categorize...isometric platformers?

Tyrian was a good top down scroller/shooter for whoever that was that asked...(I believe it might have been two-player co-op...)

And I think very few, if any, of those titles are abandonware...X-Com is available on Steam...some of the others might be available on gog.com...emulators are worth a look as long as you still have your Genesis carts laying around so there's no question of legality...

Anyone still remember the name of this DOS game where you can chose to play as either helicopter or tank. In between mission, you get to use the points you earned to upgrade your weapons? There are even night missions. The view point is from bird's eye.

This game is fun as hell, released around warcraft 2 time.

I still load up Raptor: Call of the Shadows once in a while. Ridiculously addictive, and I love the midi soundtrack. One of my all time favorites.

I also enjoy Megarace, which was another game I spent days on when I was six ish, but I can't get it to run with any stability :(
