I have problems running good old DOS games on my WinXP. Namely, it is Transport Tycoon game. It starts OK and works smooth for 10-20 seconds (sound, mouse, graphics - all works fine) and then it crashes with the error either "stack fault" or "memory access denied". Have you ever had success running DOS games and how can it be done? I have already tried to run it in Win95 compatibility mode and it makes no difference. Boot from DOS does not help unless there are DOS drivers for NTFS installed - that looks like the only way to me, but it is pretty lengthy way to go. Any suggestions on how to deceive XP?

Thank you. Unfortunately, all this info available online says how to make DOS games run under XP. My program runs already, that means all drivers/emulators start working as they should. what I was asking about is why it crashes? Google search does not help, that is why I post it here.

Unfortunately Windows has begun the policy of poor backwards compatibility when they released Windows XP. Their new dos that they base their Windows in or runs in Windows or who even knows anymore is a step in the way wrong direction. A year ago this was the reason I switched to linux and have enjoyed it ever since. Anyway, their new dos is actually too dumb to run dos programs, they have to be emulated? What is that, why even upgrade dos when all you get is a program that will only work with brand new dos programs? It is terrible, I have an old laptop whose bios only alows a 720KB floppy, so I go into dos on the XP and do the good old format a: /F:720 which in all other doses creates a 720 floppy. Invalid parameter, dos is two stupid to write 720KB disks because Microsoft wants money and needs you to go buy a new system. Didn't actually say that last part, but it was pretty obvious. Not only that, but I have been using dos programs on that old computer since 16-bit games and now the new super os that can do anything forgot it's past and decided not to be able to run old programs. Maybe someone should tell the people at microsoft that they haven't created a 64-bit OS (of any quality) yet and since XP is 32-bit based, shouldn't it run 32-bit programs. Sorry for the ranting, but hopefully this problem with dos lets you see what microsoft is really about and switch to the far better linux. Unless your a gamer though, I don't suggest the switch because linux uses OpenGL instead of DirectX to run graphics, so a lot the newest games won't run in it (for now projects are working on this).
