    Dota is a Custom Map in Warcraft III: The frozen throne.

    Basically it's setup like demigod. There are 2x teams of up to 5 players. The player each pick a hero and there are 3 lanes where creatures from opposite sides spawn and fight. The heroes kill things, gain gold/xp, get new skills, and buy/upgrade items. There are around 60ish heroes in Dota right now, and probably about the same number of items.

    Well, maybe I'll buy The Frozen Throne and get the DotA mod instead. I own Warcraft 3 just never bought the expansion. Amazing how it still costs $20 after all these years. I see that the Diablo set costs $40. Wow! Most games would cost less than $20 for the complete collection after a few years, usually.

    It has a pretty large community on Azeroth, TDA games are where its at!

    Not a mod, but just a custom map.

    If it's not a mod then how does it get all the different heroes and other stuff people are talking about? Maybe I need to play WC3 again and maybe it'll be clear to me!

    It's a custom map, so yes, its a mod, but its a mod that is built into the WC3 system.

    you can find many public games on Azeroth server. There's also leagues you can join that enforce stricter rules.

    Actually, it is pretty popular on both of the US servers right now. I'd say DOTA accounts for at least 1/3 and most likely even more of the total War3 games being played on Battle.Net now.

    @htwingnut

    The game uses models and such from the original game. It really uses some pretty impressive coding to get the various spells, some of which do not come with the original game, to work.

    As regarding the price stagnation. Blizzard games still sell at that price so companies will see no reason to sell it even cheaper

    dota is highly addictive. its a bit overwhelming at first, but after a couple games you start to see what heroes/skills/strats are good.

    All the "ole" blizzard games come in sets for like $19.99, but yeah I remember when they were like $39.99.

    DoTA is a pretty fun game. You either like it or you dont. And if you do like it, you will be addicted to it for awhile, especially if you have friends that play it. Then, no matter what youre doing and they get on, you will play.

    Lol I know because I listened to my friends in vent for months playing this game. I played it a few times, but really didnt get it. Im stuck with fps's and cant stand playing old games from blizz. Thats just me though. :cool:

    Heh, yea I haven't played since I joined the army... so a little over a year and 1/2 since I last got the chance. When I first started playing there were only 2x taverns of heroes for each side, last time I played they just started putting some in the 4th I believe.

    Yes, that gives the sense of how popular the games are even so many years after their release. Hopefully the Diablo battleches will lower its price after diablo III comes out (I really liked the game... but for $40... no way, I'm not that desperate).

    DotA = GAWD!

    dota is great, has some furious action moments and its not a shallow game as u may think.

    I recommend www.dotaportal.com and www.garena.com.

    and if u dont have TFT there is a ROC version (without the -allstars) u could try that also, not as fun tho...

    Great, maybe I won't give it a shot then. That's what turns me off to multiplayer games. You may suck, but you still want to have fun. But you get yelled at if you don't perform to their expectations.

    indeed, the dota community ranks among the worst of all gaming communities. It's not like you couldn't get Frozen Throne anyway, the ACTUAL GAME is pretty good you know.

    Ok, thanks for that. I have the original and frozen throne now. Will probably play through the single player campaigns for fun, and if I'm up to the challenge then I'll give DotA a try.

    Well, they act like that because, well, honestly, who likes to lose?

    It's like putting Probert on the first line to play 20 minutes a game, on the PP. Probert was good at some things, just not scoring/assisting/stupid penalties.

    Hope that analogy worked :p

    For those of you not so inclined about sports, Probert was(is?) an enforcer for the NHL. He was good at bullying people around and knocking them to the ground, my kind of guy, but didn't have much fines or scoring capabilities.

    Dota's been around for so long that the community has become pretty inclusive, and it's just assumed that everyone who still plays has at least a basic knowledge of the game. That's why they get upset when people do stupid things.

    Ah well, I still see people picking up Starcraft for the first time, and I don't get pretentious with them. But to each their own. Sounds like a mutually exclusive club that I won't be joining. I don't need someone yelling "More dots, more dots!" at me. :)
