the video quality of hdmi and dvi is exactly similar. the differnce is just that hdmi has audio also whereas dvi don't.

to an extent they are the same but you guys are a little wrong
the newer hdmi specs have better color profiles. it also depends on if the dvi we are talking about is single link or dual link. there are a couple of differences but usually people prefer the hdmi. even though it also carries audio it is only useful at this point with high end audio systems that support the higher spec hdmi profiles features. just because an audio system supports say hdmi 1.3b doesnt mean it supports all the features of hdmi 1.3b one specific configuration i can think of that would be very useful is to have a soundcard that encodes all audio into say dolby dts in realtime therefore you could send that through the hdmi and have surround sound otherwise youll probably only get 2 channel audio from it. there are a few other things also but a quick research of both hdmi and dvi can tell yah that

Well, that's my question. If you have a quality soundcard, i.e. X-fi, you can't use that sound card through the HDMI, or can you? You have to use the software audio or whatever the video card offers?

I have found HDMI's image quality to be noticeably inferior to DVI; my monitor supports both.

HDMI is really just for connecting to HDTVs and nothing more; it is not meant as a connection to monitors.

DisplayPort is the replacement for DVI and the new standard for monitor connections. See Dell's blog post here for details and why it is superior to HDMI:
