DVI-DL -> HDMI cable on GeForce GTX 285M and 100Hz with a LCD?

So here's my problem: I use the MSI GT660R laptop which only comes with VGA and HDMI ports on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285M video card. Just today I got a Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ LCD monitor (DVI Dual Link) which supports a refresh rate or 100Hz, meanwhile my old LCD (Samsung SyncMaster T200, VGA) only supports 75Hz.

I play video games for a living so even if it may not be such a huge deal for the average Joe, to me this makes a great difference and that's why I'm trying to figure it out (since someone was going to say my eye can't tell the difference or something similar anyways).

If I purchased a DVI Dual Link -> HDMI cable, would that work and let me use the monitor at 100Hz?

I've been told in theory it should work but I wonder if the HDMI version of my video card (I'm not sure but I heard HDMI 1.4 didn't come out until the GF 4xxM series so I guess I'm stuck on 1.3?) will support such a high refresh rate? Some people have told me HDMI does not. However, if it goes ONLY by bandwidth, I've read that HDMI 1.3 supports 10.2Gbps while DVI-DL only supports 8.8Gbps so it should be OK?

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

    Cheers

edit: If this is on the wrong forum, please tell me where to post it/move it and sorry :)

I think that HDMI can handle that per spec in 1.3, not sure about DL DVI but I would think it can.

I would be more concerned with your GPU supporting it, especially as a mobile gpu it may not have all the resolution and refresh options that a desktop gpu has.

This is one of those things that is so sparse that the only way to find out probably is to just try.

I know DVI Dual Link can cause that is what the monitor is meant for. As far as the GPU supporting that, it works just fine on a CRT at 100Hz so in theory it should be fine then? I'm just trying to find out for sure in case there is something I don't know of before wasting money, but looks like I will give it a try.

yeah if it works on a CRT it will work on a LCD it does the same kind of output/work regardless of the monitor type.

I have now ordered a DVI Dual Link adapter & a cable, but since I'll have to wait till early next week to get it, I was just wondering does no one really know anything about this?

Should do, the 285m supports 3D which requires a 120hz monitor so 100hz should be possible.

Ok so, I can get 75Hz steadily working, but whenever I use 100Hz the "NOT OPTIMUM MODE" popup comes up after 1minute at that refresh rate and my screen goes black until I alt tab out of the game, and then it works again - for one minute.

Any ideas how to fix it or is this just an issue with the monitor that can't be fixed?

Getting the cable tomorrow so if it doesn't work I guess that's about it unless anyone else has ideas? I can run 75Hz fine like I said and 100Hz until the "not optimum mode" box pops up from the monitor; there is no way to disable it from the monitors OSD menu or with a firmware update.

Ideas? Getting desperate, wouldn't want to build another computer just to get 100Hz to work.
