Does anyone have DX 9 installed on a Vista setup? I'm thinking that DX 10 is causing poor system performance.

Yea, you want to have the latest builds of both when gaming I believe. Most games are running DX9.

    I think.....

Anyway, I know I have installed both. Hope that helps for what it's worth.

    What games are you playing?

More than likely, it's a combination of running Vista and the device drivers not being as mature that contribute to your poor performance.

it's no surprise though. Games will generally run FASTER on XP. Very very few games on only a select number of settings will run FASTER in Vista.

The performance hit taken by DX10 isn't really worth the visual boost, which is current almost non existant, unless you have an overpowered PC. Example: Gears of War looks the same in both 9 and 10, but 10 gives you the option for AA, in exchange for a huge frame rate hit.

Not me personally. But I like to look up info on games before I buy them ;) Guess I should have said that. Everyone I ask says DX10 isn't worth it.

    Also I'm fairly sure DX10 =Vista only

AFAIK, no game runs faster in vista than in xp,

however, a lot of games run faster in dx9 vista than dx10 vista.

i know of a select few instances where dx10 (vista) is barely faster than the dx9 (vista). either way, xp still wins.

Hi, I have been reading a lot today about the phrase 'clean install', could someone explain or refer me on what exactly means clean install? does that means uninstall old drivers before installing the new ones?

    Thanks beforehand.

you should check the FAQs under your manufacturer's forum here.

Also some advice. Asking questions or posting items not pertaining to the original poster's topic is essentially "hijacking" his thread. If you have further questions about "clean installs" after reading the FAQs, post under a new thread.

Vista in general is little bulkier than XP. so, unless you run a game that uses the advantage of DirectX 10 and the system is powerful enough to handle all the tasks you'll probably notice most games running on DirectX 9 will perform well on XP than on Vista.

generally if run a game on vista that uses DirectX 9 and you have DirectX 10 on the system theoretically it should not degrade any performance because DirectX 10 should be abel to handle DirectX 9 games as it is... but i may be wrong on this point ???

FYI, Vista starts with DX9 and DX10...

Having DX10 does not directly decrease DX9 performance, but running the Vista kernal does indeed reduce performance when compared with XP due to higher overhead and driver development.

Running in DX10 right now is not always recommended, even if you have a DX10 card and Vista. Some programmers are just all-around better with DX9 and will be some time before they can take advantage of DX10's supposed benefits.

DX10 is NOT about eye candy... there are a rare few things DX10 can do that DX9 cannot.... (better particles... dust, water, little pieces, etc.)

DX10 is about efficiency... but it won't do any good until programmers are used to using DX10 as well as they use DX9 now.
