Is there any possibility of any of the nvidia 8-series cards from the 1720's fitting in the 1705's?

Probably not since there was a complete redesign of the notebook. Ice-Tea might be able to help you out, or Gophn, or a few others that know more about the modular graphics system Dell uses. But probably not.

The Short Answer:
NO
It seems that the new high-end DX10 modular cards are going to be more standard towards MXM-II,III,HE
Note: strictly talking about high-end desktop replacement notebooks. (which makes up less than 1% of all notebooks on the market)
Clevo already has reformed their videocards to use the standardized MXM cards... which was mind-blowing since they were known (up to date) to use their own proprietary modular design.
Dell, on the other hand, has also been using their own proprietary designs as well. When the new Dell 1720 [and its re-branded Inspiron/XPS lines] comes out, I am confident to see a MXM card design in it... if they [Dell] plan on making the notebook upgradeable.
Only time will tell.... though it seems that the high-end gaming notebooks are moving towards a standardized road for upgrades.... which is great for the consumers.
