Anyone have any idea when DX10 laptops would be available? I am itching to get an Asus G1 but if DX10 laptops are coming soon, I may wait.

No one knows for sure. Most say mid-late 07. I have been struggling with the same problem. It really depends on how fast you need a notebook.

I'd wait. Dx10 is a significant leap in Graphics. From the nVidia GeForce 256 to the 7900 range has been one generation of GPUs. Its best to buy a new GPU once a new architecture has been released.

Even if they are released this year, they will probably be stripped down versions of the desktop cards.

I'd wait for a little bit. Apparently low end GPU's are starting to trickle through with mid-range GPUs following later in the year.

But nvidia has been talking about Q2 so its not that far away.

But will the mid range DX10 GPUs (8600 go) even be able to fit into a A8js or a G1? Also I wonder if the notebooks will go up in price with the new cards and the Santa Rose CPU's.

There are a lot of new technologies coming down the pipe so it might be worth waiting:

    DX10 GPU
    Santa Rose CPU
LED-Backlit LCD displays (brighter, lower battery consumption)

    It's soo confusing :p

All I know is I want a laptop that will run UT3, Crysis, and Alan Wake at decent fps :p

I Imagine the clock speed would be lowered quite a lot to reduce heat dissapation and make the heatsink smaller. Many new GPUs will come out, the 8600 wont be the only one.

Same problem here, also was looking @ a G1, but since i don't really need a notebook right now, i decided to wait for a DX10 notebook, one with go 8600 or something...

Yep there are alot of people waiting, I'm one of them, I want a top of the line, and I don't want to get something now that will be 'last gen' in 3 months or so. And as it was stated a couple posts ago, theres alot of mobile goodies coming out soon.

The head of Nvidia also confirmed that the company has plans to release a family of GPUs for notebooks based on the GeForce 8 architecture in time for Intel’s code-named Santa Rosa platform launch, which is likely to be late Q1 or early Q2 2007, which means that commercial shipments of lower-power GeForce 8 are just around the corner.

I'm hoping Compal refreshes their HEL-80 with an 8600 go card. Just going to wait and see before I buy.

The 8600 Go will fit into 15.4" for sure.
Obviously a notebook with all the new features will cost a bit more than an older one. ;)

Forget about finding them on mid range notebooks this year. They're way too pricey for a 1500-1800$ laptop.

it never said 15.4 inch notebooks

low power for the 8 series could mean it could fit in a 17 inch and not 15.4 that soon yet

at least not till a lot of power optimization has been done

It will probably run supreme commander fine, But crysis is a DX10 game and The Go7700 in the G1 does not support DX10. So you probably won't be able to run it unless Crysis has DX9 Support.... And i'm not sure about halo2, don't know if that is a DX10 game or not and wat kind of specs it requires...

Crysis will be supporting DX9.0c cards, but for "the best experience" it is recommended to have DX10. Remember that when they showed earlier demonstrations they were not running it off of a DX10 card since there were non available at the time.

    Here are the requirements:

    Minimum
CPU: Athlon 64 3000+/Intel 2.8GHz; Graphics: NVIDIA 6600/X800GTO (SM 2.0); RAM: 768MB/1GB; HDD: 6GB; Internet: 256k+; Optical Drive: DVD; Software: DX9.0c with Windows XP

    Recommended:
    CPU: Dual-core CPU (Athlon X2/Pentium D)
    Graphics: Nvidia 7800GTX/ATI X1800XT (SM 3.0) or DX10 equivalent
    RAM: 1.5GB
    HDD: 6GB
    Internet: 512k+ (128k+ upstream)
    Optical Drive: DVD
    Software: DX10 with Windows Vista

So I would imagine the current g1 or a8js models will run the game fairly smooth on low-med settings.

I just want new integrated chipsets dammit! I'm not paying right now for year-old technology.

Guess I have to wait a few more months.. ug.

I just hope notebook manufacturers put in a ****ed Nvidia integrated GPU with the Santa Rosa instead of some Intel garbage like they have in the past.

Does AMD have a new mobile chipset on the horizon?

the t7200 is at LEAST as fast as a 3.8 ghz p4.

ok, you mean the mobile 8800 go? The one that asus has live demoed uses desktop cards.

But in one of the articles they said there was also going to be one that uses laptop mxm type 3 cards.

Now, suppose the mxm one comes to market, it would come bundled with an 8800 or 8900 by then. However you have to think of this version as non upgradeable because where can you buy laptop mxm type 3 cards?

Sorry but i don't know what mxm is... but asus is making the xg station which lets you use a desktop video gert externally on a laptop. so would this be possible with the 8800 go desktop (since they don't make a lappy version>
