DX12 will be Windows 10 only

In news that surprised exactly nobody, seeing that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to Windows 7/8.1 users for at least the first year after release:

*Salt shaker out* Microsoft claims that DX12 will increase performance by up to 50% in CPU-bound games.

All of Nvidia's DX11 class GPUs will support DX12:



Fable Legends, a Windows 10 and Xbox One exclusive which offers cross-platform play, appears to be the first announced DX12 game.

 

Yay. And there's like what, less than 1% of games are "CPU Bound"? But good to see Win 10 is a free upgrade from Win 7 and 8.1!

 

Dammit, it looks like once again I'm left out in the cold...
At least I will be able to upgrade OS free of charge... Yay!

 

They want to put as much distance between Windows 8 and Windows 10, but I feel like down the line they will put out DX12 support on Windows 8 (didn't they do something similar with DX11, at first Windows 7 was not supporting it, if I am not mistaken?)

 

Its dissappointing that DX12 won't make it to Win7, Micro$lop is being greedy...Win7 enjoyed only one DX version while the XP had 2

Nope, DX11 was included with Windows 7 at release and added to Vista a week later.

I agree, although the free offer does soften the blow somewhat.

 

I really don't mind as the upgrade is entirely free. Now if it weren't that'd be a different story...

The fact that Windows 10 is a free update and Microsoft has never mentioned DX12 and W7/8.1 in the same sentence basically confirms that it will be W10 exclusive. DX11 was different because it was announced to be supported on Vista from the get-go.

 

No no I understand you, I am just saying that Microsoft will probably change their strategy after the huge community backlash (the fact that it is a free upgrade doesn't mean majority will do it), like the start button in Windows 8 situation.

 

Why would there be a huge backlash? I guarantee the vast majority will upgrade, esp. gamers. Everyone wants to get the hell off of Windows 8, including Microsoft. That's what their strategy is with this offer. Windows 8 will die a quick death like Vista before it.

Have you not seen the announcements? Windows 10 will a free upgrade in the first year for all Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users. Straight from Microsoft.

Dude, you gotta relax, stop attacking unnecessarily please, I read the first post, still I am pretty sure a huge portion will keep using Windows 7. Free upgrade for a year doesn't mean it will be free the next, from economics perspective it is 100 dollars the next year, and I am pretty sure there will be a TON of people who won't pay it. There is still a huge portion of Windows users still on XP, forget about 7.

When Microsoft said it's free, they mean free for the lifetime of Windows 10. It's not trialware, it's not a subscription. You don't have to pay a cent as long as you upgrade during the offer period, which is the first year after Windows 10 is released.

I know how stupid this sounds but will there be any slight possibilty for Win7 to get the DX12 ??

No chance at all I'm afraid. Windows 7 has now entered extended support phase - which means only security updates from now on for the OS.

Windows 8.1 is still on its main support phase so there is a possibility that it could get DX12.

But not 7.

I never understood the hate for windows 8/windows 8.1. I like it. Its runs great on an SSD and it's just Windows. I mean its nothing new, sure some of the UI elements are different but its still Windows. ¯\_(ツ _/¯

 

People hate change. ... Even if it a minor like making the Close button 1mm larger, people still scream murder.

Windows 7 is better if you ask me.I didnt tryied 8.1 widnows but i had windows 8 and it was so confusing for me and i find it way more simple on windows 7 and the only big plus for windows 8/8.1 is fast booting up.Regarding games i think windows 7 has a better compatibility with some older games.

IMO this sounds a lot like what happened with DX11. When DX11 came out alongside Windows 7, there was no DX11 hardware on the market. However, because DX11 is a superset of DX10 feature-wise, it ran fine on existing DX10 hardware and provided performance boost via multi-threading, but without DX11 exclusive graphical features such as tessellation and compute shaders. DX12 could be the same thing: Better performance on the DX11 hardware of today and better graphics on the DX12 hardware of tomorrow.

 

It's not about the cosmetic changes, the thing is there are many restrictions imposed on the win8 and up for eg the safe mode and then comes this driver signature verification and most importantly the CPU benchmarks coupled with physics performance and for the last the RTC bug.

8.1 is improved over 8, but there's still the whole lingering issue of limited desktop UI support. If all you do is push buttons and play games or surf the web, you probably don't care. If you want to do some more downtown work, it's a nightmare.

 

What kind of downtown work are you talking about? Development? .net works great w/ 8 ;/

 

I'm just talking about general productivity on the desktop. Manipulating multiple windows, driving to my apps quickly through the Start menu, ... Not about performance, about UI. When aero was introduced I scoffed at it as a nub feature. I grew used to it and loved it. Transparency helps with productivity when you're trying to multitask multiple apps on multiple windows.

 

Anyone here actually try the Win10 preview build that is out there? I'm looking forward to upgrading from Win7 to Win10 for $0.00.

This would be good.. I would love to have a laptop where I can have the NVIDIA GPU for all the NVIDIA specific crap and use the AMD GPU is the main one.. This way I can support both companies lol.. Although I don't want to support NVIDIA after all the **** they pulled, this will make my gaming experience better overall.. That's if NVIDIA allowed something like this..

I've seen special drivers created by modders that appear to allow this already (though of course, it would be much more polished if they were officially produced).

 

Modded drivers that allow Nvidia and AMD GPUs to co-exist in the same system, or which allow both GPUs to actually render on the same frame? Big difference.

I remember older modded drivers which allowed you to use GPU PhysX with an AMD primary and Nvidia secondary (dedicated PPU). But Nvidia has locked that out for a number of years. And it was super-niche to begin with since PhysX never took off so most AMD users didn't miss it.

 

Hmmm... I can't remember. I'll search for the post (it was on some other forum) and update if I find it.
