I'm curious as to how good windows 10 will be. If it's around as good if not better than windows 7, I will probably upgrade....probably won't be but we shall see.

Do I care? Nope. I'm not going to forego DX12. But then I am a big fan of W8.1.
-
What does that mean exactly? Windows 8.1 is fantastic, much better than 7. I'm interested to hear your thoughts. If it's just not being able to get over the loss of the UI paradigm of the Start Menu there's tons of replacements. I myself am glad it's gone. 8.1 is much leaner and meaner under the hood.Last edited: Feb 28, 2015

10 combines a start menu with Metro tiles you can enable or disable at will. I like 10 so far but I dislike not having a Directx 12 app to test...

Google. This isn't a debate, its a fact.

I wouldn't trust anything from Zymphad as fact.
But let's see now, W8 uses more VRAM and blows at CPU benchmarks. Wow, so lean and mean under the hood. And OMFG it shut down and boot so quickly because it hibernates.

Here is a review showing Win 8 glorious gaming performance over Win 7. Simply amazing

Once you move past the synthetic UniEngine Heaven benchmark (who really cares about synthetic benchmarks, we play games not benchmarks), Windows 8.1 beats Windows 7 in every single game benchmark. Granted it's not a wide margin, but it's EVERY SINGLE ONE.. EDIT: Oops.. sorry I forgot about GRID Autosport, Win7 won there oddly.
You couple that in along with better security, LESS memory usage, not sure where you found it runs worse in less memory than Win7.. that's just not true.. better startup times.. It's not really a contest outside of how much you like the UI. Personally I'm in desktop mode in 8.1 99.9999% of the time.. I think the only time I ever see metro elements is the charms I use rather seldom, and when i press windows+Q to quickly type an app to execute, sometimes I type so fast I don't even see the charm complete rendering before I've hit enter an the app/game starts. -
It's all within margin of error. Hardly a convincing case for 8.1's superior performance, which is why Cloudfire posted it in the first place.
VRAM not RAM
Also not being able to disable DWM to play windowed games w/o V-Sync is fail in my book. -
I think windows 8.1 is decent, it's just the layout and UI that I find annoying. From what I've heard is that windows 10 will be like a mix of windows 7 and 8 so I'm hopeful that that's the case and if so I'll probably upgrade from windows 8.1. That and there are a few other things about windows 8 that I also find annoying but don't feel like mentioning them ATM due to me being busy.
-
Oh and look here, Windows 7 min FPS blows 8 out of the water:
Seriously though, whichever way you slice it, there's nothing which definitely proves one OS games faster than another. I love how Windows 8 apologists split hairs and cite numbers well within margin of error as somehow being evidence and fact that 8 is the vastly superior OS. Give me a break. -
This is only relevant if the dGPU is your sole GPU. With notebooks with optimus (this is notebookreview...) my dGPU memory usage is ZERO until I start a game. Not sure I really care how much memory the windows UI is consuming in my case.
-
It is relevant to me. I have SLI = no Optimus. And only 2GB VRAM per GPU so every last MB counts.
-
I only noticed windows taking up 140M on the iGPU, but that's probably because I was at 1600x900.
-
How is that beating anything? It cant even be called a margin
-
I'll concede for gaming it really doesn't matter.. I prefer 8.1 personally
-
For gaming, 7 is the only OS I'll take because of being able to disable Aero so I can game windowed w/o V-Sync and so I save a chunk of previous VRAM. 7 also has much better compatibility with a lot of old games I have.

Windows 8.1 sucks balls. Massively neutered CPU performance. Nannying at every corner..and the worst offender of all DSE.. What I have to restart.. Again..
Aesthetics and Metro I actually don't mind.octiceps likes this. -

That's a shame, it had a lot of developer support on some big studios latest engines. I still think the bitcoin mining craze that drove up the price on all of AMD's best cards was a large factor in limiting the viability of Mantle. If all those cards were in gamer's hands, Mantle's already impressive adoption rate could have been a good deal bigger. -
Agreed.. However Mantle was kind of **** for me in BF4... Always had massive drop in FPS even with my 7970M + 3940XM easily being able to max out the game on DX11... it was literally a drop from 45-50fps to like 10-20 with Mantle...
-
Doesn't directx 12 kill mantle anyway?

R.I.P. Mantle. Thanks for pushing graphics APIs forward. DX12 and Vulkan are indebted to you.
-
Exactly.. Without Mantle, DX12 wouldn't have quite a few of the features which it has now... Mantle spurred Microsoft to improve DX12 and add these...
DX12 will be Windows 10 only
