There's a "Previously, on Dragon Age: Origins" button in DA2 that will fill you in on all you need to know. If you have a DA:O savegame some of your choices will carry through to DA2, but nothing major. Just bits and pieces of the world here and there.

the reviews rated it lower than dao since the world is smaller and most reviewers expected choices to carry more weight and were looking for a more branching storyline.
im waiting for a user review here on nbr...

If you ever have any desire to play through Dragon Age Origins, then I would play that first.

What you get by playing Dragon Age Origins first is that you get an immersive introduction into the world of Dragon Age (something that Bioware excels at doing), you get an introduction to the mechanics of the game world, and you get to carry over some of the plot choices made in DAO --> DA2.
