    Ok whats the deal...

I have to sign up for steam AND windows live just to play this game. WHY?

It take an hour (ok way over dramatized but it does seem that way) to get to start this game because all of the crap i have to sign into just to make it work.

Is there anyway to stop this?
I cannot stand steam and could easily live with out windows live. I just want to install the game which i purchased and not be bombarded with what is essentially spamware just to play in single player mode.

You must install both Steam and Games for Windows Live in order to play the game, after doing so, it doesn't really add any time to get the game going, as everything logs in automatically. If you already have an Xbox Live account, use that for the Games for Windows Live account, they are the same thing.

It is marked on the box that these services are required to play. They are not spamware, they are services used by the developers and publishers of DoW2, without them, they would require their own proprietary systems, and you'd still need a log/password.

    (Currently enjoying DoW2)

Yep, I hate steam. I want hard copies of my games and never download them. Many of the games I dont play online and loading the whole mess to play offline chafes me to no end. All forced on me because they want to try and sell me the next thing. I know what I want and having to load a bunch of crap I dont and wont ever use while getting in between me and what I paid for in the vain hope of getting into my wallet aint it.

I know, I've unfortunately already done that just to play, but i call BS on them being "needed" its just something to package with the game to make people use the services.

They are annoyances that arent required. Why should i log into anything just to play the single player game. Its just irritating.

The more and more i play newer games the more and more i understand the desire to pirate and hack games. I could care less about the online content i just want to play the campaign or at most over a lan with friends.

I guess i'm going to have to read the boxes of games more selectively from now on and just ignore the ones that make me sign up for useless things like steam and windows live. :(

Such a great game to... it just kills my love for it every time i see the bloody icons pop up on my task bar :(

The Games for Windows Live service is used by the game for online matchmaking. It's not that they want to push the service on you, it's that they chose to forgo creating a custom matchmaking system, they instead decided to save time and money and use Microsoft's.

Steam is probably the most benign form of DRM you will ever find, especially because it offers you certain services for using it. For instance, Steam auto-updates all of your games without you needing to do anything.

One of the reasons it's a great game (and I agree, it IS VERY FUN) is because Relic was able to focus on gameplay and design rather than match-making code and DRM.

I'm not trying to say you should ever have to give up control of your system just for a game, but Steam isn't all that bad. If you really can't stand it, you might try giving other services like Impulse a shot. Impulse functions like Steam, but does not require the Impulse client to run if you want to play your games.

If you want it even MORE hands-off, try out GOG.com, they just give you the DRM-free installer file and you can do anything you want with it.

Thats the problem. If they were optional i would be all for it.

Want to play online... use steam
Want to match up with players with similar skill... use WinLive

All i wanted to do was place my disc into my computer and play the campaign. All of this extra "required" stuff is just irritating.

I only hate Steam when it doesn't work... where it pop into my face and said could not connect to Steam when I'm clearly connected to the internet.

I hope they implement something like what Impulse practice, you doesn't need to run Impulse to play the game, only to update and so.

It frustrated me one time when I could not connect to Steam for one week straight, I could not run all the games that I legally purchased and clearly installed on my PC.

    [EDIT]

Not trying to be a cry baby but I'm not satisfied with Steam CS either... When I contact them about my issue... They are like "There's 1875495346592641... users out there and non of them is having the experience you had, so it must be your fault"... and the forum community... Most of them lean to the category of "fanboy" more like it.

I hear you nic. I use Steam extensively, but I really hate their support attitude. If you look at the forums, they're poorly moderated, and you're attacked if you ever say anything negative about a Steam experience, even if it means you can't play the game you purchased!

I really hope Steam's attitude changes, otherwise I'll be forced to stop buying from them. I really like it because they do have good sales, you can play it on as many PC's as you want unlike many DRM's that limit your installs or number of PC's, and I rarely can get out any more to buy boxed games.

Don't hate on Steam it has single handedly revolutionized the computer gaming scene. Steam is doing away with pesky DRM and is brining the entire computer gaming community together which nothing has ever come close to doing AND it has rocketed game sales and reduced piracy so we see more games in our lovely computer gaming future! I know I buy way more games now because of how convenient STEAM is.

On the other hand hate on windows live all you want. It sucks to no end and they have absolutely no clue what they are doing what so ever. Case in point is they tried to charge for it for about the first year it was out like they do for the Xbox and no one bought it so they just made it free. I mean come on ANY computer gamer could have told them no one is going to pay for online on the computer and they had a whole team behind it that made that choice. Its pathetic and ridiculous.

On the other hand games for windows (not LIVE) is a fantastic idea and I applaud Microsoft for what they did as it standardized a lot of things. To get the ta it must use multiple cores effectively, have native wide screen support and a bunch of other things that are necessary for todays gamers. It ushered in the era of global wide screen and multi core support. So buying a game that has the games for windows tag is fantastic as you know it has to adhere to a bunch of stipulations that we gamers want to have the tag.

Games for Windows LIVE however is just an ill conceived attempt for MS to get more market share in EVERYTHING EVER.

    Thats my 9.3 cents anyways.

The GFWL match making is completely, outrageously rubbish anyway; when I first started out on the hard game rather than the beta version, I got pitched against a team of rank 20+s and its been that way ever since. Its next to impossible to win a game against them due to their insane amount of game experience. Due to this, GFWL should definitely NOT be mandantory and players should be matched on ingame rank and thats all.

So i shouldnt hate an unneccessary program placed on my system for no reason?

I dont use steam, i have never used steam, and i highly doubt i will ever use steam. I buy discs with games on them, so why do i have to have an online game dealer pushing their program on me when its completely unneeded.

As an option... sure, use it to get the free artificer armor... great.
But appearently i dont want the bloody extras because i refuse to use it. So why in the name of the Emperor (catch the game reference) should i have to suffer Steam on my rig.

This has made me mad enough to actually "want" to find a pirated version of the game jsut to get rid of all of this stuff from my system. As far as i'm concerned its Spamware, plain and simple.

Give me an option to use their "great services" sure maybe one day i'm bored and want to download L4D as i've never tried it. But the initial "push" has all but made me want to burn the bloody game I purchased on a DVD.

so its wrong to hate something you like but perfectly ok to hate something you dislike as well... at least your consistant

meh, games were doing that anyways, windows just made up a bunch of standards so it would "seem" a bigger deal.

Unless its something like dinner dash, most new games all come with those as standards because they have to to run correctly.
