So.... I've noticed a massive lack of chat about the DayZ mod for Arma II... I've played maybe a total of 20 hours so far, and it's freaking amazing! Recently I haven't been a big fan of shooters, but this is just a different level of game in my opinion.
I'll ramble more later on, but check out dayzmod.com if you are interested... All you need to do is buy Arma II and it's expansion (I did from Steam) and followed the instructions on dayzwiki.com
The super quick overview for those that don't want to click the link... It's a 3d shooter that is considered an MMO... You are a survivor of a Zombie Apocalypse and you have nothing... The world is static, so where you log out, you log back in... And when you die and respawn... you do not have your stuff... Also there are some good additions to keep it difficult... You need food and water to survive, you can break bones, when you bleed and you don't do anything about it... you die. I could go on and on, but I probably should get back to work.![]()
Enjoy to all those who have no idea what I'm talking about!

I guess it's worth mentioning that the game is in Alpha/beta phases at the moment, it's free to play, and the final release is planned after Arma III comes out. (No idea on dates)...
But I do know this... Even with all of the bugs and silly things that aren't polished in the game, it's easily the most entertaining game I've played in a while. -

I just bought Arma 2 CO but I'm not sure how to install DayZ
Can you provide a direct link to the instructions, or even better, paste the instructions here in this thread? -
dayzwiki.com
I went there and followed the instructions and got it working no problem. I would suggest getting "Six Launcher" (I believe there is a link in that link... I can't view it b/c I'm at work behind some nasty anti-gamer web filter...) The Six Launcher will update you to the newest beta (happens maybe every few days) and that saves you a lot of time compared to downloading the new files and doing it manually each time there is an update.
If you can't get it working let me know and I'll do my best to help, but check out the above site... it will walk you through it perfectly.
Cheers! -

For anyone else trying to install this, here is the link to the instructions:
How to install DayZ - DayZ Wiki
It seems there are a couple of different ways to go about it, one of which is using a utility called the DayZ SixUpdater:
- If using Steam, run both ARMA2 and ARMA2: Combined Operations once to complete installation.
- Download the latest version of Six-Updater from https://dev-heaven.net/projects/six-arma-updater/files
- Run the Six-Updater exe file and install to the location of your choosing.
- When install is complete, there will be two "Six" programs (Six Updater and Six Launcher). Run "Six Launcher."
- You should see a DayZ themed program with a server browser. Click the Update button in yellow on the left.
- When update is complete, select a server and pres Join.

Thanks for doing this for everyone!
Have you been able to get in and play any yet? Sadly I won't be able to login for another week or so, but the game can create pretty interesting stories... -
I am also very interested in this game. Waiting on my new machine to arrive then will try to get this game and get it started. I've watched some videos and see a lot of potential and replay value with this. Your very own Walking Dead story!
Plus, who doesn't like zombies??? -
I desperately love this mod. Getting it up and running can take a bit of online research, but it's well worth it. The challenges are what make it fun. It has the best skybox I've ever seen in a game; celestial navigation does apply here. If you know your constellations, and it's a clear night, you can navigate (a bit). The sun and moon rise and set as they should, and the moon phase and level of overcast dictate how bright night is. It can vary from somewhat easy to navigate, to pitch black.
Plus, zombies. And danger everywhere.
