I realize both of these are old news, but just watched the movie, "Event Horizon" again, since it's release in 1997. Good movie imo.

Anyways played Dead Space after its release, not a bad game , even though I despise OTS view in games and have come to the conclusion that the basis for this game was ripped right from the movie, Event Horizon. Even the feel of both the movie and the game are the same !

Was just wondering if anyone else came to this same conclusion ?

Yahtzee did. I saw his review before picking up the game, so while I could say that I saw a lot of EH in the concept, I was obviously already colored to that opinion.

i believe dead space is the spiritual heir of system shock 2 but both could have taken inspiration from event horizon - SS2 even more so.
to me its the scariest kind of sci fi horror.
    i love all three.

Love Event Horizon, one of my favorite movies.

But. I don't see how Dead Space is THAT similar to EH, other than taking place on a derelict space ship.

In DS, the ship is infested with creatures made out of re-animated corpses of the dead crew, made so by an ancient evil artifact. More of a Slasher type horror.

EH has a derelict ship that literally went to Hell and back and was transformed from simply being a ship to something else, something living and evil, and it affects people's minds and drives them mad, making them kill each other and themselves. It seems to thrive on fear. EH is more psychological/haunted house-type horror.

But yea, otherwise, they're exactly the same.

my opinion is they are similar in the sense that both are lovecraft in space.
system shock 2 would be the in between of EH and DS.
also try to watch the DS animated movie.
it fleshes out some details and has that psychological component you dont get much in the game

I keep trying to play this game, but it just scares the crap out of me. The sloppy controls don't help much either. Most of the time I die trying to stamp on a downed freak, but somehow my boot keeps missing him.

You are doing something wrong, trying to crush the enemy with your boots is supposed to be the last resource in battle.

And on topic: interesting, I liked the game, and I'll look for this movie. :D

I am under the impression that ammo is a very scarce resource, so I try to save as much as I can and bash them whenever they're down. I guess I should just keep shooting then. :D

Definitely. I played the game on hard my first time through without ever running out of ammo, and I rarely stomped anything to death (maybe some of the little scuttley enemies). In fact, it could easily be beaten with only the plasma cutter and a steady hand. The fully upgraded pulse rifle is a nice security blanket for large numbers of enemies, though. :D

Ammo is not very scarce nor plenty. Just get a good aim and try not to waste a lot. It happened to me by the end of the 1st chapter and I had to restart the chapter. Afterwards it was all fine.

Event Horizon's director is responsible for a few other movies based on video games (and I realize Event Horizon came out looooong before Dead Space)...namely, the first Mortal Kombat movie and the Resident Evil series of movies...

I think Event Horizon and Dead Space have a similar feel (due to the derelict spaceship), but I agree with a previous poster...Event Horizon is a psychological terror whereas Dead Space is an actual, physical terror a la Aliens...

F.E.A.R. 2 actually has references to Event Horizon...

Sunshine is another horror-in-space movie that pleasantly surprised me and then disappointed me with the ending...if you enjoyed Event Horizon, you might try Sunshine...

Solaris is another psychological horror-in-space which was decent...it just doesn't use all the shock imagery (rivers of blood, eyeless ship captains, etc) that Event Horizon does...

And skip Ghosts of Mars or whatever it was...watch Star Trek's Catspaw instead...Catspaw isn't scary either (though it's supposed to be), but it's very camp and who doesn't love Shatner's Kirk and Nimoy's Spock? Unlike Ghosts, as least the characters in the goofy, not-scary Star Trek episode are lovable...and you only lose 50 minutes of your life...

And if horror in space really is your thing, then since this is a gaming forum, then I highly, highly recommend System Shock 2...graphics are dated, but the monkey sounds along with Shodan's voice will make you pee yourself if you can stop laughing at the ridiculous looking textures from the late 90's...no other game or movie is like it...

Sunshine was really good i loved that as well.
Ghosts Of Mars - god that was shockingly BAD

Reminds me that i have to force myself to complete Dead Space, not coz its bad but coz its one of the few games that scares the sh*t out of me when i play it, doesnt help i have all lights off, sound right up and play it in the dark :) but its a great game, cant wait for the second one, hopfully by then i will have completed DS1 :)

Love Dead Space, also love Event Horizon, but I don't see the connection between the two other than a derelict space craft. Event Horizon is about finding, what the crew of the Event Horizon believed was Hell. To me it was more like Hellraiser in space (there already was a Hellraiser in space the year before, but it sucked).

Anyway both are great, Event Horizon happens to be one of my favorite movies. I really love movies with derelict space craft, ships etc. You might also like Virus, with Jamie Lee Curtis. It is about a derelict research ship called the Akademik Vladislav Volkov in the eye of a hurricane. Probably closer to Dead Space with the Necromorphs and whatever they are in Virus.

Also highly recommend Sunshine, probably one of the best Sci-fi films in years. Captain Kaneda's sacrifice is probably one of the best scenes I have witnessed in a long time.

Just for fun here is the Dead Space into lullaby. XD

Virus now that takes me back, god that was some time ago, great film shame they never made a second or anything which would have been awesome. wasnt the monsters in Virus (if i am thinking of the same film) due to a "signal" from space which was some alien AI and it then started using the machines to make smaller ones before attacking the humans amd turning them into more gruesome Borg like creatures?

Dead Space and System Shock 2 are the natural progression of the original System Shock (1994), so I must disagree that Event Horizon was an influence.

System Shock had: the derelict ship, logs detailing what horror previously happened, deformed crew, etc.

Yeah, that is the one, great film. :) I like how the alien AI saw humanity as a virus and came to exterminate. lol Also if you like derelict space craft and horror try the Star Wars book Death Troopers, yes I typed Star Wars book associated with horror. It has a derelict Star Destroyer, stranded prison ship and of course zombie Stormtroopers. XD Here is a fan made trailer for the book, this is the best book I have read in awhile and certainly the greatest Star Wars book.

cheers i will have to check it out, yeah i loved how it saw us as a virus and tried to kill us as well, could have been a great series, shocked they didnt make a second or anything

I think that films/games/books set on a derelict ship whether its a space ship or a ship on land has great potential to scare, due to confined spaces and most of the time they are dark and you hear monstrous sounds and screams that echo throughout the area, just makes it so much more gripping and edge of your seat kinda stuff - wish they would make more like that - but then again that could be a bad thing and could be flooded with constant titles that do the same thing over and over

Wow I haven't seen EH in a looooooong time!

Setting wise yes, DS and EH share some obvious similarities but the plots are totally different. Gameplay wise I get the SS2 references and they make sense but I mostly thought of DS as RE4 in Space and don't aim for the head. :)
