I just purchased a MSI GX630 low-end gaming notebook. It has a Nvidia 9600M GT 512MB dedicated video card.

I want to decrease the shared video memory, so that I can have more ram.

Under Display Settings> Advanced Settings> It reads a Shared video memory of 1278MB See I want to get "Shared Video Memory" down to 0 or less than what it is.
I could do this previously when I owned a HP Dv9000, through the BIOS. I tried to look through the BIOS but couldn't figure it out.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your gpu will allocate ram to the gpu as is needed. Otherwise it's just used as system memory.

You don't have to change any settings.

Well, Under my DXDIAG settings my RAM is at 3GB when my RAM is suppose to be 4GB. So when i play World of Warcraft, I get 3GB of RAM or 4?
So there is no way to chage the shared memory though?

The GPU will only use it if it has to. WHich its unlikely it will get that high.

Otherwise, i dont belive there is a way to.

The GPU can only use the memory that is recognized by the OS.

It's because you are running a 32bit operating system, you'll need a 64bit os to recognise more ram.

Ok, Thanks. So, the 64bit OS depends on the Copy of Windows? or is it a prosessor based thing?

Yes, you need a 64-bit copy of WIndows.

But you also need a processor that can handle a 64-bit OS. WHat is your CPU?

30FPS is pretty good for WoW on High settings.

Its not the Processor that matters much in gaming, its the Graphics card.
    I doubt its Vista.
What Graphics card do you have>?
    ;)

As I stated in my first post, it's a Nvidia 9600m GT 512MB Dedicated. and for WOW, a game 4 years old i was expecting something between 35-45Fps seeing the graphic requirements for that game.

Yeah, you should be getting at least 40FPS

    I agree.

    Thats weird.

Make sure you have your latest drivers. Make sure no other unnessesary processes are running. But that big a difference is unusual between two 9600M's.

What resolution are you running the game at? That can have a significant impact on framerate.

    Ok, I purchased a MSI GX630, from newegg.com
It is suppose to be able to run WOW 40-50FPS,

I have ran the game, World of Warcraft, full settings in Full Screen 1280X800(wide) and get FPS of 20-30 in Open areas. I also get 30-50FPS when I am inside. I want to however be able to run it in windows mode which also gives it just about the same FPS. I'm going to upgrade my video drivers and see. I have been told by friends to run XP and you'll get better preformance. Let me know what you what you guys think. I'll let you know if there are any diffrences after driver update.

Ok, Well updating the drivers has been a minor improvement. But not an extreme one. I am still nto seeing the FPS that i should. I will contact the customer support on Monday after the Thanksgiving Break. If you guys have anyother suggestions please let me know. Also i mite downgrade to XP. Thanks a lot for your help. I had been told that this laptop could run most new games at medium settings flawlessly. I am not that impressed so far.
Let me know if the specs i posted should be able to or not.

Also I can run the game with 20-30fps on good Settings which is the one lower then Full in Windowed mode with some other apps like MSN Messenger, IE, and WMP. So, I am not that happy.

Right click on the desktop and select "NVIDIA control panel",
Go to "manage 3D settings" and make sure Anti-Aliasing is set to off; if it's on it'll say 2X or 4X etc.

Also make sure you have the "performance" power plan enabled and keep your laptop plugged into the AC adapter while gaming.

It might be worth downloading gpu-z, cpu-z, and HWmonitor to monitor temps and to make sure your processor and graphics card are not downclocking while your gaming.

Ok, well just to let everyone know.. I ran Company of Heroes at Full Settings and ran the Preformance test under the games settings, i was getting an average of 50FPS, that game has a bigger system requirements. This does not make sense.

    Thats unusual.

    Try This...
Right Click Desktop > Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Setings (On side bar)

Then go to Program Setings on the tab bar. In the drop down box, find the game. Then ajust the settings in there. Lower Some that arent as important to you. Then try the game again...

    Some Suggestions:
    Force Vertical Sync Off.
Turn down Anisotropic Filtering and Antialising -Setting
    Triple Buffering off.

Yes, Vertical Sync did it. Now I can run the game, in Ful Screen mode at an Avg of 40-50 FPS, with full settings. I can however run it in windowed mode at about 30FPS avg sometimes getting down to 20's in the laggy areas, which i guess is because of windowed mode. But i still feel like the game should be running more smoothly. None the less, I am now a little bit satisfied and I am no longer worried that it is my system and that it rather is the game.
