I have been using this laptop for one year.

    17" dv9700t
    C2D P7500
    4 GB RAM
    GF 8600 GS
    XP 32 bit

I never used this laptop to play anything other than quake3/AOC/CS 1.6. Simply never strained graphics card, and now still its gone! End of useful life.

Since few days, its unable to take any graphics load. It hangs while playing Age of empires (Old version , which can be played with no graphics card). It cant even start quake3, jsut freezes.

    Basically graphics card is degraded.

Never overclocked. Tried old/new/standard drivers. No use. Smtimes the screen is fuzzy/dotted at the boot up. My waranty ended last month and immediately the problem started. No heat issues as well. Confirmed.

What can be done? Any pointers?

If I remember right, older HPs from 2 or so years ago had bad sauder or something on the GPUs, and it would wear out over time. My notebook before this one died about 1.5 years into it's life, the WiFi went out first, and then I suppose the GPU since the screen only stayed black and nothing came up.

You can replace the video card or get a new laptop.

Thanx for such quick responses. U guyz rox. I will do the hairdryer thing. Also I was thinking, should I try mild overclocking? will it change something?

Weekend is coming and I am afraid I try something now and my gaming weekend would be ruined.

btw I just mailed this HP guy, mark too!

Overclocking won't help. It could even make things worse.

This is probably a case of hardware failure. If you're out of warranty, though, you may be out of luck. Definitely call HP support though, nevertheless.

oh and try going through hp support if you still have a warranty first as the hair dryer thing may void your warranty...

    good luck

What kind of warranty do/did you have on the system? If it ran out, how long as it been out? As noted, I also recommend calling HP anyway to see if there is anything they can do. I remember several manufacturers offered extended warranties to those with the GeForce 8-series chips since they were prone to failure; I don't remember if HP was one of them.

hey, deffo call HP before taking you system apart!!! My friend's dv6000z died due to faulty GF8400, it was out of warranty for about half a year and still, HP replaced the motherboard for free. They do care about their customers.
