    Hi there!

Im doubting which of these two laptops would be best for gaming performance supposing they had the same specifications (core 2 Duo, 2ghz, 2gb of RAM 8600GT)

Which of them would you prefer if the price was exactly the same (1199€ ;)?

Remember that the screens are different, and that the acer has Dolby Surround.
    thanks....

PD: please dont move this thread, you know is the right place for it.

Dont you mean debating? Links to specs would help get you a better answer, but based on personal experience, I prefer Dell to Acer in terms of build quality, service and reliability.

The Dell has a 8600M GT which is clocked slightly higher then the Acer I think. So it will be a bit faster. But they are very similar so dont worry about this and get the laptop you like better. Performance is pretty much the same.

The dell doesn't have a HDMI everywhere....which is very stupid. I think the Dell's 8600GT performs slightly better than the 5920, about 100-200 3dmarks(06) if I remember correctly.
Thats not very much, and shouldn't really be a factor in deciding which laptop to buy.

i'd get the 5920 personally, just because of the better sound & screen.

but you definitely can't go wrong with either, the dell probably has better build quality though but its not like either is just going to fall apart on you.

are both laptops thick? are they like old pentium4 laptops?
is the 5920 too plastiky and cracky? or solid?

There thick but not that thick, probably like just under 2" thick with the lid closed at the thickest part i think.

I said 1520 would probably be built more solid because its mainly magnesium alloy (i think) while the 5920 is mainly plastic.

well the dell 6400 is the same thing as the 1505 (its just the Canadian version). And the 1520 is just an updated version of the 1505 except it looks a lot nicer but I'm pretty sure the materials in the 1505 are the exact same. so no the 5920 would not be more solid than the dell 6400.

Depends what type of screen you want. If you want a glossy screen, go for the 5920, because the 1520's glossy trulife one suppossed to have annoying 'grainyness' problems with it. If you want a matt screen, get the 1520.

The 1520 has better build quality, and from owners comments, it doesn't get that hot while gaming. The 5920 has the option of upgrading the graphics card in the future because its compatible with MXM II whereas the 1520 isn't. Plus the 5920 has a HDMI port, but thats obviously only usefull if your thinking about hooking your laptop to a HD TV.

I would go with Dell, because there warrenty is like the GOD of all warenty's. If you screen breaks, they dont ask questions, they just replace it. So they are really good.

Definitely go with the Dell. Even though the 1520 lacks HDMI it does everything else better.

Actualy if you see the dell description, and after reading review of the new 1520, the build quality as improved a lot since the 1505.The magnesium alloy chassie on a consumer machine of this price is rare, and the finition is better than dell. Acer is know for their crappy build quality. I would go 100% with dell.

QFT. I owned one Acer notebook and the screen died exactly a year and a month later. The warranty was only for one year and the repair cost was $300 plus shipping and waiting at least a month (their quote). As well the paint on the plastic chassis was getting all taken off, both track pad buttons were broken as well as the hardware wifi button, and the DL DVD-RW drive was having serious issues. I will never own an Acer product ever again.

Although the design has changed on their latest notebooks I'm sure the build quality (AKA cutting every corner) remains the same.

Oh and BTW, before my Acer I owned a T43 which I had to go back to using after my screen died and still works perfectly fine to this day so I do not abuse my notebooks horribly.

ROFL!!! Ha, are you really gonna believe those fools at Cnet.
Please visit these mate: One, two, three and four.

Btw, I agree, its a different interior colour but doesn't mean that Cnet has to lead your life. Everybody has there own opinion and some people will like the design.
