    Hi all,

been a while since i got my dell laptop and i've finally gotten a chance to overclock the thing.

My specs are c2d 2.0ghz, 2gb 533mhz ram, x1400, using the new omega 6.9 catalyst

    my original 3dmark 05 score was 1955 at 433/396mhz using CCC 6.9

after overclocking to 580/450, i get around 2339

    (LINK: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=2257665)

the temp after running the 3dmark05 numerous times (checked using i8kfangui v3 beta 07) was that cpu peaked at 61C while gpu is 60C (though idle, cpu temp is much cooler).

the auto temp control in i8kfangui is set for cpu at turn on fan slow at 56C till 48 and turn on fan fast at 58C till 56C

for gpu, fan turns on at slow at 58C till 54C, and fast for 60C till 58C

(Please give advice/comment if that auto temp range is okay or if i should set lower, i want to maximize laptop life)

for work, i under clock the gpu (since cpu already has speed steping) to 260/252mhz. under that setting, the fan turns on at slow setting every min or so. Cpu tem idles at 47-49C and gpu temp at 54-58C (slow fan setting cools to 54C but slowly creeps up to 58C in a min (please advise if that is norm for idle at underclocked x1400))

i find that i can still increase the core speed to up to 580, as for 580+, i think its possible to OC more but i find that going from 570 to 580 resulted in only 20 more points and 2C increase so i find it not worth it.

Memory speed i find is the limiting factor and i can only raise it to 450 max and 230 lowest, any higher/lower and my system enters BSoD or picture gets crazy and blacks out.

Playing bf2142 with 1024x768 (not sure about the vertical pixal count) results in 45-51fps with settings on medium

playing FEAR multplayer in 1024x768 has 41-45fps with all things on except aa, af and all shadows (yes i know shadows make the game great, blah blah blah)

playing oblivion at 1280x720, texture size large, all fade to 50%, grass distance to 40%, view distance 100%, outside shadow to 40% inside shadow 30%, all other shadow feature disabled, with specular distance at 100%, water detail to medium and all water effects on and blood detail to high, i get 24-26fps outside, dips to 20-22 during fights outside, and inside i get 34-38 though i get dips that goes to 24 for no appearent reasons

EDIT: the OC and underclock was done using the ATI tray tools, it will now work for your x1400 and it will save and boot with your preset settings if you want it to

EDIT 2: the computer has not been reformatted, though i think i've gotten rid of a lot of crap ware and have uninstalled macfee (worst programmed antivirus software (maybe on par with norton) ever). This games were played with arouodn 55-60 processes running in the background

here are my super pi scores:

    - Not calculated. [ 16K]
    - Not calculated. [ 32K]
    + 000h 00m 01s [ 64K]
    + 000h 00m 02s [ 128K]
    + 000h 00m 05s [ 256K]
    + 000h 00m 11s [ 512K]
    + 000h 00m 26s [ 1M]
    + 000h 01m 03s [ 2M]
    + 000h 02m 25s [ 4M]
    + 000h 05m 21s [ 8M]
    + 000h 12m 40s [ 16M]
    + 000h 27m 30s [ 32M]

yes i know it's a little slower then what it should be, oh well

EDIT 3: not sure where to put this, mods can move it to dell section

strange, i cant increase by too much, i can only OC to 439/405 before the system crashes.

mckam, you should try it with the latest drivers, I understand some older drivers disabled overclocking the X1400. If you are still getting the same crashes then, perhaps look at getting Dell to replace the GPU. I understand the stock clocks on the Inspiron e1505/6400 are 432/396. I can easily get 500/425, with a bit of headroom left. But because I play most of my games on the train, and have OCD, where I can only wear long pants, heat after 30 minutes of gaming becomes an issue.

Im pretty sure that i will not be able to get dell to "replace" the GPU without a good reason. And seeing that OCing isnt exactly allowed, i do not have a good reason to ask for a replacement-

and I am using 6.9 Omega Drivers.

nvm, im able to OC my card now. though i decided that a few frames isnt necesserily worth potentially frying my card, and not being able to use my computer while i send it in for repairs.

I was able to OC my X1400 on my T60 to 402/346 before getting artifacts.

posting your 3dmark05 results would be appreciated!!!

also, i don't get artifacts but when my memory goes above 450 or below 220, my screen has like a screwed up ghost

and i think it says it's got a memory error

anyone know a way to get past that or explain to me why that happens?

Although many of you have the same graphics chip (X1400), just because one card can be overclocked to a certain level does not mean that another card can go to the same levels. If the card only goes so far before the system crashes, than that's how far it can go.
