You can contact Dell and get a 7900GS...that's the only option you have. You will only be able to purchase the laptop GPU from Dell or a pulled-part from a Dell on eBay.

You are stuck with what was offered on the E1705 during its lifetime. So the nVidia 7300, ATI X1400, and the 7900GS are it. Dell uses modular cards, but the design is for Dell only. MXM cards will not work.

Unless the 7800go was offered...I do not recall if it was though. That amazon card will NOT work as it is a desktop card.

I bought a new mobo AND graphics card for my old E1705. Dont do it, it is such a pain and is not at all worth the money. If you are set on doing it, buy a 7950gtx off of eBay.

Here is the tutorial that I used for the gfx card portion:

    Good luck!

well the card that cheeseman offered is a 7900 for $169....im not to concerned about the cost but will the upgrade from a ati x1400 to a geforce go 7900 be significant? (typically i play fps, strategy and madden)

I think it is something like 4 times more powerfull than the x1400. which means if you can play a game at 800x600 you will be able to play at 1600x1200

I really doubt that is accurate... but hopefully I'm wrong. 4 times more powerful? Seriously? 4?

Klebz, I have the same rig and here's what happened to me last week: my gpu has been acting weird, dll error msgs, bsod and color runs. Anyway, chatted online with Dell technician and got an upgrade of the card from 7800 to 7900. Performance wise it is up somewhat but here are you options:

For the e1705 you can get a x1300, x1400, go7800 gs or go7900gs. You will either have to hunt down the part on dell, signing on and going through your signon for your accessories works best, then order the part and either install it yourself or if you have warranty and coverage dell will send someone over. Which was in my case, the tech came over and disassembled and replaced both the card and mobo in 10 mins.

Performance wise, the 7900 is a highend card that will play all the games out there from mid to high settings with AA off for the newer ones. It will future proof your gaming for the next year or so. Is it worth it? That is something you'll have to decide.

    Good luck!

Yes, DG008 is the 7900GS and is the maximum upgrade for a Dell e1705. I just upgraded mine from a Go7800. You can find them on ebay for 1/4 of the price Dell charges.

Oh, and by the way...the only cards that will fit in the e1705 (without modification to the case) are the 7900GS, GO 7800 (heat issues), and the x1400 and they are Dell proprietary versions of the cards so they fit in the case.

the 7800 was used in the 1705, but i would recommend finding a 7900gs, the 7800 was heavily under clocked in this model and was only a little better then the 6800gs.

I have the go 7900gs, and I can say from experience that this video card is amazing. I've had this computer for almost 2 years and it is still going very strong. It can play all the games out there in the market easily, although you may have to reduce the settings for a rig-killer like Crysis. Everything else will be easy.

As other posters have said, it's pretty much equivalent to a 8600m GT GDDR3, and thus will be several times more powerful than the x1400.

This post is correct. Avoid the go 7800 if you can.

You can also technically install a 7950gtx, if you're willing to modify the case slightly. I would only recommend this if you're savvy with internal hardware.

Last note: Get it from Dell. You should be able to get a warranty, which is essential in this day and age. Computers are always breaking and you need something to cover yourself when it does.
