    Hello everybody,

I bought a Dell i9400 (or E1705 in some countries) with nVidia 7800 this week. I have noticed a peculiar behavior of the 7800 GPU. The idle temp is around 65-70C. Once it crosses 70C (when on the desktop) it gradually rises to 80C . As soon as it reaches 80C, the fan starts to cool the GPU to 70C and then this process repeats itself.

My core temp never goes above 80C when I am not playing games. However, when I am playing games, the core temp is around 85 - 88C. This is VERY HIGH! FYI, I am using the Xtreme-G Mobileforce 84.56 drivers...Does changing the driver affect the GPU core temp?? I also tried Xtreme-G Mobileforce 83.90 drivers...Now I am using the Dell Stock drivers in order to prevent any damage to the system.

All the GPU gurus out there, please help me out or else this hot plate goes straight back to the dell factory....Please RESPOND!

    Cheerz

Well if they are modded drivers, they could raise the temp. Did you OC the card at all?

If you get a cooling pad and a program like I9kfangui or Notebook Hardware Control, you can adjust to when the fans come on, thus, lowering your temps.

I'd recommend getting a cooling pad - the Spire Pacific Breeze is great for $15 from www.newegg.com. I own it and so do several other members of this forum. It works well, although is a bit loud.

Odd that your notebook is overheating . .what type of surface is it resting on and is it getting enough ventilation? Try propping up the back a bit.

Question: is I9kfangui safe to use with the e1705/go7800 setup?

AFAIK, it is safe with the i9400 because I am using it. However, the only problem is it is detecting a lower graphics card temperature. It is offset by approx. 6C and does not tally withe nVidia driver temp. There is another glitch in the I9kfangui, you cannot directly control the fan speeds. Even though I set the fan speeds to max, the system overrides the instruction and sets the fan speed to low. This happens when the graphics card temp is around 65C.

so this makes it not compatible with Core DUo laptops, that what it said. I just want this program to find out my GPU temperature, since ATT does not tell me (X1400). ANyone here know of a program?

You may also use the profile function under Options to get a better control over what temperature the fans starts in i8kfan. I use it to cap my temperature low on idle by using slow speed, and set the speed to start high when gaming (For example, If temp > 60, fan=High). You may have to experiment with it to see which temperature range is the best, so the fan is not on constantly because that would be noisey and reduce the fan's life.
