Well I don't find the OP's story to be too far fetched. I just went through a situation with my two year old 9300. It took a while, but I did get a 9400/E1705 as a warranty replacement the other day. In addition to that, I got them to send me a 7900GS to replace the X1400 in the 9400.

I am also getting a new replacement system (complained about X1400 being inferior to 6800) but since I got the 7900GS now, I think I'll send the second replacement back. Especially if it's a 1720 which I think it is.

With Dell it's a matter of persistence and luck.

Nah i think its actually quite easy to get a totally new system especially if the one you have is not being produced anymore. My friend had a simular expereince and mananged to get a replacement system that was different too his priginal laptop, but only after he agreed to pay £100 on top.

Oh, I have absolutely NO problem with sending yall pics. I'll include all 3 laptops together with the spec sheets of the refurbished 1720 and the brand new XPS 1730. The Dell rep said he'd call around monday or tuesday. I don't see how it would be here that fast, and then I am in college at George Mason so the mail department does have to process and organize the package. Not sure exactly when it will be here.

manzi, they offered to give me an xps if I paid the difference between the original 1705 and the XPS I was to get. I completely refused to pay ANYTHING extra.

I also just noticed the 1730's became available. SLI 8700 GT's. mmmmmmm... I really wish I had gotten one of those. Oh well...

A question, if i can.. or recommendation... i have an XPS m1710... the DVD Drove has not worked properly almost since i got it.. a year now.. it reads, but very slow, and sometimes it stops.. i have to use my warranty on this, i have an 8X drive, do you think i can get an 16X drive from them?

I have not called dell, because my work was very fragile (architecture thesis) and i didnt wanted anyone touching my computer. Now i can...

if this is way out of this topic, dont mind me..

One other thing, regarding this forum topic.
OMNISLAHS3D, the original problem with your laptop was your Graphics card failing? or was other thing?

I am asking becasue in my XPS m1710 i have the 7900GS card., and i would like to know if it has issues...

unrinoceronte, Errr, yea, something went wrong with the graphics card. Not really sure exactly.

Anyways, XPS came in today. I got some pictures of the 3 laptops together and also have a picture of the order form from Dell zoomed in enough that you can see the date listed. Hope this will do, as its probably the best I can get for you. I'm not to concerned with proving my story. Now what I am concerned with, is that I have the option of selling this laptop and getting a laptop of a nvidia 8600 M GT, 2 GB of ram, 2.4 GHz Dual core processor, and maybe a 7200 RPM drive. Right now in the XPS have the nvidia 7900GS Go, 1 GB of ram, 2.0 Ghz dual core processor, 5400 RPM drive etc. And of course Dell didn't give me Bluetooth on my new XPS, so I'm gonna ***** like hell tomorrow about that. Either way, here are the pictures, but please remember to answer my questions :p

Quoted.."I'll include all 3 laptops together with the spec sheets of the refurbished 1720 and the brand new XPS 1730."

Ok so I got it..They upgraded your 1720 to a XPS 1710 after sending youe the refurb. Can I ask what video card you ended up getting with the specs?

I included this all in previous posts. I specifically stated that it was a 1710 with the same specs as my 1705. Don't make it out like I'm the bad guy please. I was very honest, and had no reason to lie. I ended up with a 7900 GS again :-(. To be honest XPS is SOOOO not worth the price. What a rip off. It is EXACTLY the same as my 1705 but with a fancier top and some LED lights that waste your battery.

Oh wow, I just noticed that your right. In the post where I promised I'd include pics did say xps 1730. My apologies. That was a typo on my part. Earlier when I was asked by Manzi if I got the new xps 1730 I said "no, I got the XPS 1710. They are re-creating my laptop as much as possible". And they pretty much did re-create my laptop completely on the XPS system. The only difference is they forgot bluetooth. Either way, I did mis-type it at the end there but I thought it was clear before hand that we were talking about a 1710.

Either way, flamenko your a genius. I called up Dell using your ordering a laptop guide and the sales lady dropped 300 bucks off the laptop instantly. I kept on telling her thats not low enough and that HP or Toshiba gave me a better deal and she would keep going lower to the point that she wanted to get her "manager" involved to see if we could go lower. I tried that with the XPS systems lol. I'm not sure if I got a bad rep or what, but the guy dropped like 25 bucks off. Great idea! I never even thought about haggling with Dell!

Im glad it worked for you and I didnt mean to doubt you. I just havent seen Dell do just a part upgrade in a system yet, only the entire system. You are also only now the fifth I have known to get this 'laptop upgrade'

    Good stuff.

No and actually it was reduced another 200 to 1399 (See below). The system total value in the end is 3640 with the 2Gb ram (I upgraded to 4 at my cost) and the 32Gb HD (Upgraded and awaiting the 64Gb).

Heres the Dell Order status of the 200 reduction:

    17/08/2007 175XXXXXX Shipped 17/08/2007 12:00:00 AM XXXXXX -$200.00

So my end savings was actually $2241.00 w/ tax.

EDIT: You know you have been around here awhile when you remember that.

wait. flamenko... What happened? What laptop did you get THAT much of a reduction on? Do you think Toshiba would do that? I was thinking about putting the XPS for sale on ebay and hopefully get around 1800 if I'm lucky for it. If I could I'd call up toshiba and probably attempt to get one of their SLI 8600 GT systems for that price.

Seriously though, tell me what happened with that other laptop. How did you get such a drastic reduction?

You can make me the 6th. I got a brand new 1720 for my 14 month old 1705. Of course I had to argue with them for literally 3 months. It was hell, so I definitely deserved it. 25+ hours in phone calls, 4 technicians coming to my house, and had to send my laptop off to the repair depot once.

The only redeeming part is that virtually every component in my new 1720 was upgraded except the graphics card. I had a 7900GS and got an 8600GT. I heard there isn't that big of a difference though, so I'm not going to constantly complain after I already received a new system for a 14 month old system.

So this is a bit late, but defining "Similar or better" is entirely up to Dell. They are the ones that decide what's similar or better. You could argue with them to change their minds (like you did), but had they decided that the 8600M GT satisfied the criteria, they would have been in their right to send it to you, without you being able to do anything about it. And technicially, it is similar. The fact that you can OC both and get different results won't affect them, since that tecnically breaks the terms of the warranty.
