Ok, since I'm buying a new notebook I want a graphics card that's at least as good as my desktop's nearly 2 year old FX 5900XT and preferably one that is better. So, what cards should I be looking out for?

ATI:Nvidia
X300 = Go6200
X600 = Go6400
X700 = Go6600
X800 = Go6800
X800XT = Go6800Ultra
New cards:
X1300 = Go7300
X1400 = Go7300
X1600 = Go7600
? = Go7800/GTX [no ATI competitor at the moment]
And then performance [lowend>highend]:
X300 = Go6200 > Go6400 = X600 > Go6600 > X700 > Go6800=X800 > Go6800Ultra=X800XT [should be close to Go7800] Go7800 [just a bit faster than Go6800U/X800XT, howver, haven't seen any benchmarks so cannot be completely sure] > Go7800GTX
Thanks to Chaz.
Stick with the X700 and above...I think the go 6600 is even better than that. So this is how the ranking goes in laptop GPU's.
Hope this helps! -
Well, that all very interesting...
but where does my nvidia FX 5900XT fit in?
And is it even possible to compare desktop gpus to laptop gpus? (I always had the impression that laptop cards were weaker versions of the desktop ones, is this correct?) -

I don't think weaker is the term I would use....the can be considered "weaker" because some are downclocked to save on heat, space and the sort.
Here is a site for comparing some of the desktop GPU's:
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1604
It looks equivalant to a ATI 9800XT. Which is compared to the X600 128MB. So it would be around the X600 - X700 mark I believe. Here is the article to back that up.

Yes!! That's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks a lot!
And it seems that the x700 is indeed my new minimum... your first post was spot on -
Hmm, been doing a little reading over at overclock.net, and they have an excellent thread ranking nearly every desktop gpu ( here) and I think the op already said he'd like to add mobile gpus to the list... Since you guys also have such a great ranking of mobile gpus, why don't you work out some sort of list-merging with them? Instant sticky, if I ever saw one

A Mobility X700 should be faster than a FX5900XT. That's a pretty outdated card, probably runs the newer titles fairly slow. .
An X700 is much more advanced, you'll have a better experience gaming on that.
My Mobility X700 256MB when OC'ed can match my Radeon 9800XT, which is faster than an FX5950 Ultra. The X700 actually runs the newer games faster than the 9800, quite noticable. -
Actually I've been running UT2004 with very high settings and it's pretty smooth... I've been holding out on the newer games until I get my new laptop
Edit: I've also played BF2 demo with high settings on the max resolution for my screen (1024*768) and it's silky smooth... that's why I worried so much when looking at the mobile gpus...
Edit2: Hey Chaz, I've just read that you're thinking of writing up a post of card rankings. Have you checked out that overclock.net thread? -

You're not reading my posts ... Just look a little higher
Oh, I'm such a nice guy, here you go. -

OK, I saw another post with two links in it, thought that is what you meant - wasn't sure which one you were referring to.
Thanks.
I'm posting my chart right now.Expect to see it sticked up top.
