This is what Ive been telling people! Yes the DRM completely sucks and Im completely against it, but damn is ACII an awesome A++++ title! Took everything good from the first one, threw all the boringness from it, and made it into one of my favorite games of all time! Definitely worth checking it out...sure the DRM is a problem for some, but its not THAT bad...I mean, it could be like Starforce and force you to uninstalled virtual disk software and then not even work haha!

    well its bad for me.
the reason i have a laptop is becasue i move around a lot.
i often go to places where i dont have fast, reliable internet.
if i were gaming on a desktop then it would be less of a problem but a problem still - we should never have big brother watching over us while we game (legitimately).

If you completely ignore the big picture then the DRM isn't that bad  Awesome A++++++ title or not, the point is, if people still buy it then every single A+++++ title in the future will probably use this exact same type of DRM because they know people will still buy it.

If you are completely against something but still buy it then you aren't completely against it.

Doesn't matter how awesome the game is. Buying that game is supporting Ubisoft's abuse of customers with their DRM. I will not support any publisher that feels punishing customers is more important than pricing games for what they are actually worth and be accountable for their sales loss, not just brushing off their failures as a piracy problem.

Leaving DRM aside, I didn't particularly love the game. I do agree it is a much better game than the first, but it mostly shares the same experience and overall... everything. I even felt I was playing the same thing, with fixed stuff.

Not a bad game at all, but I guess I was more impressed the first time around with AC1, that AC2 feels more of the same with fixes around. I couldn't stand the forced italian accents and speaking too... I chose language and subtitles in English, so why should I still get them in Italian!? :D

I loved the second game due to its storyline. The story really took off in the second AC. The first one was confusing, and the ending left me spending hours doing research, and still not getting what it wanted me to know. The second one is still very mysterious, but it sheds some more light on the AC universe, and I'd have to say, I'm liking where this series is headed to :D

maybe they will add a patch for this drm, but the game is superb
i can't wait for AC 3, where maybe they will take you further in history and kill hitler haha, with some ninja gun moves like max payne

Maybe AC3 will take you further into DRM. They could probably have customers stay on the phone line to the Ubisoft HQ to prove they own the game and people would still buy it saying ''but its a great game''.

New DRM ''any phone line required with video phone''

let me ask the people who has played it:

does AC2 have more personal story line that gives character to Enzio?
from looking at that music video up there, it seems like there are:
    romance - kiss scene
sorrow/grief - death/execution of family or someone in jail scene.

and it also seems like the music video suggests that Enzio wasn't an assassin at first, but he receives training to become one?

because in AC1, I felt like I jumped right into some assassin's body and started killing people and running around without much storyline.
    am i right?

    Yes.

The story and storytelling is much better in AC2. And yes you start out as plain old Ezio and are basically thrown into your role as an Assassin via redemption and lineage.

Where I live, my internet connection is too slow and unstable to consider playing a game with this kind of DRM. It's basically a big F-you to everyone outside developed countries. If I want to play this I'd have no choice but to find some crack that'll let me play offline.

Wrong, it's not just one of those games released nowadays, it's a superb one.
Too bad for this drm indeed. I'm also planning to get splinter cell conviction, looks really interesting, and i'll prolly get a crack cause i'm leaving home next week.

I'd have to say I agree with this. It is just a game. Yes it's a good game but there are lots of good games that are much less restrictive about where and when you can play them.

    Good luck with that.

Pretty much. As long as the game companies insist in giving you an inferior product to that which you can get for free, piracy will continue.

I thought that with the digital distribution era finally we could get a better product than what the pirates get because for me the major issue was having to keep the disk inserted all the time to play the game. The other DRM schemes have never bothered me or given me any issue (save updating to the 64 bit version). But this DRM feels like going back to the end of 90's/early 2000's in terms of game security without logic.

True. But I think if you give people a reason to get the legitimate product, they will come. When you're selling a download for the same price as a boxed game, and you start cutting all the manuals and such out of the boxed games so there's no real benefit to buying the game that way... why would you pay $60 when you can get the same thing for free, sans DRM?

I buy the Civilization games because they come with great manuals, and posters and such so you can read the tech tree and all. I have the SCII limited edition on preorder because the things that come with it are worth it to me.

Game developers are trying to lock up something that is nominally free to reproduce instead of trying to provide actual value for the money. If you start providing actually physically scarce value for the money (convenience, updates, statuettes, whatever), more people will buy, and you won't have to worry about the pirates because they're just free advertising.

It may not justify completely a digital download costs the same as in the retail, but in the digital download you can download it as many times as you wish while in the retail if you lost the DVD then you're done.

Hm I don't know about you but I have gotten some pretty sweet pre-order deals on digital downloads. Also, sales pop up all the time with digital. Yes there are titles that never seem to get a big discount or take way longer than others but then so what... it's not like there's a shortage of good games to be had for fair prices through digital distribution.

The value is there. As mentioned you can download it till your hearts content. There's also great sales, automatic updates, cloud services, old titles updated to work on newer OS's/hardware...

There's tons of value in digital, in fact you can say the fact that you don't have to store a disc, box and manual, and have a disc in your drive to play is actually all value too. That as well as the significantly lower carbon footprint left using digital distribution vs producing, packaging, shipping and distributing physical media. And if the price is too high for you, just wait for a sale.

I only buy maybe 2 games/year at full retail. The rest are all discounted and usually new titles. You just have to be on top of it or be willing to shop for games like you might groceries. "Oh look pineapple is on sale this week, I think I'll get some."

So, if AC2 is cracked then this group will not take a while to break Splinter Cell too coz both of them have similar DRM. So, we need to suffer in that game too. :(

all games are eventually going to be cracked.
It's just a matter of your choice: to support DRM or not.
Talking about cracks here won't really do much difference I think.
Even if you are content with buying the game and then applying the crack, you are still supporting Ubisoft to get DRM in their future games. Which is probably the only reason you should not buy the game if you don't want any hassles with DRM in the future games. Unless you're okay with waiting couples of weeks for cracks to be released every time Ubisoft releases a game with DRM.

    Here are the options:

    - Buy the game / Support DRM in future games.
    - Buy the game / Support DRM in future games / Find a crack.
    - Don't buy the game / Don't support DRM in future games.
    - Don't buy the game / Don't support DRM in future games / Find a crack.
    - Wait until the game is very cheap / Less support for DRM in future.

And maybe those are for 360/PS3? :p

In any case, yes. The digital download is overall a better service and you can get great deals.

As for AC2, too bad but until the DRM is removed, or it reaches 10 bucks (which given the oposition to the DRM I have no doubt in less than a year will happen) I will enjoy other great games.

Lol actually I am a cheapskate... I wait for deals on those too. Sony just added a bunch of games to the greatest hits catalogue for $30, so I recently picked up Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time. I have my eye on Killzone 2 as well but my backlog of unplayed games is too big right now. Even with my cheapness I can't keep up with all the good games out there!
