I am going to most likely buy the Thinkpad X220 when it comes out, but one of the things I'm most excited for this year is Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

How well do you guys imagine it would run on the Thinkpad X220 assuming it has a full powered dual-core Sandy Bridge processor and the standard Intel GMA HD 3000 found with Sandy Bridge?

Will I have to resort to the DiY ViDock?

I can't think of a single game from Square Enix in the last few years that runs well on PC on even dedicated GPU.
Eidos is a developer that has openly said they do not care about the PC gamers anymore and their focus is on console gaming. So don't expect a good console port from Eidos. Maybe it will be a good console port, but I wouldn't bet on it from Eidos.

Despite the hype for Sandy Bridge, the HD3000 integrated GPU is still terrible for gaming. It's about the same performance as a $50 external card. It's not as good as a $70 one...

So if you want to do laptop gaming go for a better laptop. If you want to get the X220, go for it, then build a cheap desktop.

It's possible. You can find motherboards on sale for $50. Get a Phenom II X4 CPU on sale for under $100. And get a HD5770 or GTX 460 around $150 if you look.

I just want to have one computer. I think I'll just do a DiY ViDock instead of making a desktop.

A ATI 6xxx series card is compatible with it, correct?

Why wouldn't you just buy a laptop that can do this anyways? Well I'm not the person to talk to about ViDocks since i think they are pretty stupid to begin with, at least with the current setup. Better to buy a performance laptop instead.

I need a laptop that can run all day on battery life. The Sony Vaio Z update in March is intriguing but they are way expensive... it would be a lot cheaper this way.

    U41jf might work with 10hrs battery and 425M paired with a i5 460M.

Hehe. Not even close. It is only in the same ballpark as ATI or Nvidia integrated graphics.

Sounds like you want everything for nothing. For me the best option was a cheap gaming desktop and a cheap laptop. Both together were about the price of a good laptop, yet is way better for gaming and way better for portable computing. The laptop will also last a lot longer since it is used a lot less and it has fewer performance demands placed on it.

Despite actual benchmarks saying otherwise? Well, unless you consider the 310M and 5450 to be integrated cards.

You know what, thank you for being blunt with me. I think if I really want a laptop that can do everything then I will need to throw down some $$$. Sony Z update it is. Two months.

Well you were mentioning desktop cards. But actually the integrated Nvidia graphics on my desktop (not using them though) has the same number of shaders at the same frequencies as the 310M but 3 times more memory bandwidth, although it is shared with the system. And on second thought, I was also thinking about the Core i integrated graphics.

I wasn't the one you originally replied to. :p Also, the 5450 is basically the same on both desktops and laptops.

Being able to change your mind is strong evidence of thoughtfulness. Well done. Surprisingly rare quality. +1. The 330m isn't the most powerful thing out there, but it will definitely work. Also, I guess you are waiting for the update so it should include somewhat better graphics. And it will work well with the battery with graphics switching. Should be fine.

The Last Remnant was the definitive version. Other than that, I'm stumped.

Sony Z sure seems like a waste of money for what you get. Have you taken a look at the Acer 3820TG? 8 hours of battery life with a great ATI 5650 graphics card. $800

Also, wouldn't a Macbook 13" potentially fit your needs? MicroCenter sells the basic 13" with a 320m for $1000. Pretty great deal + 10 hour battery life.

the 13" macbook uses an integrated graphics card and won't play deus ex very well. it would probably be worse than sandy bridge, which he was considering originally. not even considering the fact that you would be compromising right out the gate by having to deal with dual booting - it also has a core 2 duo and it's $1000- he can definitely get something with an i5/i7 and a decent graphics card.

I would like to point out that the 5450 is one of the most epicly dissapointing dedicated chips ever.

You know, I was considering the Acer, but one thing that I absolutely cannot stand is subpar keyboards. The Acer has an extremely flex issue with the keyboard. And the 1080p screen on the Z interests me since I probably won't need an external monitor when I go off to university if I opt for it.
