So, recently my computer (listed below) has been giving me a real problem. When I attempt to log in, it sits there for a second before the screen goes black, sits there for another minute, and then a BSOD appears basically telling me that the Device Driver failed and failed to restart, forcing a full computer restart. This happens like 2 or 3 times before it finally logs in properly. It's getting frustrating, and it has only started happening today. Any ideas what to do?

When you manage to log in look under device manager and see if there is any thing that is causing conflicts, also try using event viewer to see if you can get any more detail on what driver is failing
Edit: You could also try reverting back to an earlier date through a system restore point to see if that makes a difference -
is that happening on "cold boot"? like when your lappy was turned off for some time and then you turn it on and get a bsod, or does it happen during restarts too?

download Who Crashed and when it finally boots up after a bsod run the software and post on here to give people a better idea of whats happening.

It happens with a cold boot, and then it happens during restarts, too, about 2 or 3 times as I said. I might try the Who Crashed idea, see if it tells me what happened.

It took a while for it to happen again. In fact, I didn't think it would ever happen again, as I was able to log in numerous times with no problem. But, this morning it happened again. So, I used that WhoCrashed that MrDJ suggested and got this:
On Mon 4/12/2010 1:55:56 PM your computer crashed
This was likely caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys
Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA800E6A4010, 0xFFFFFA6002723D50, 0x0, 0x2)
Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
Dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini041210-01.dmp
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\nvlddmkm.sys
product: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 197.13
company: NVIDIA Corporation
description: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 197.13
So I guess we now know which file is the problem. What should I try to do next? -

I guess a complete uninstall and reinstall wouldn't hurt. Maybe something screwed up last installation. If that fails, I'll see about changing versions.
