i just picked up the diablo battlechest and i really, really don't feel like putting the cd in everytime i want to play the damn game. is there a working DII: LOD expansion (v1.12a) no-cd patch? and i don't think this is "wrong" to ask; it's perfectly legal if you own the game, which i do![]()

I don't think this is appropriate to talk about on the forums. (I believe it is against their rules)
-
It's pretty much against forum rules to discuss such things. And while I philosophically agree with you, I'm pretty sure the DMCA makes no-cd patches illegal, as it makes all means of circumventing copy protection (which CD-requirement code is) illegal.

I thought Blizzard removed the need for the CD on all their games!!?!?!?!? (They did)
You don't even NEED a No-CD patch as long as the game is fully patched (go into multiplayer, it'll autopatch).
Wait wait wait wait. Just go to blizzard's account page and register. Then register all your blizzard games with their service and then you never need any of your CDs ever again! Just download the game from their website and install it that way.
YOU DON'T NEED TO BREAK THE LAW!! *SCREAMS* -
meh, lame...

i see.. now i have to reinstall

Uh-oh. You've mentioned CD cracking. The moderators shall have to find and kill you now.

If I haven't misunderstood the latest patch offered for LoD removes the CD check for the expansion. I don't think this is illegal since it is an official patch from Blizzard and a feature they're giving away for free.

He isn't asking about a crack, Blizzard has made it so you no longer need CDs for their older games. You just need to make an account through them and redownload your older games from their site, not the CDs. Once that is done you shouldn't have to have the CDs anymore.

All I did was download the new patch and I don't have use the cd anymore. I did already have a bnet account though if that makes a difference.

yeah the latest patch requires no cd and yes people still play D2

Well, addressing the question of the legality of No-CD "cracks" or patches, it's a tough nut. The general consenus is that since you are not violating copyright law so long as you own the game, that they are not inherently illegal. They may, however, violate the game's EULA, though the enforceability of EULAs is somewhat questionable.
Nonetheless our official stance is that the discussion of such things on the forums is not permitted. Since an official and therefore unquestionably legal solution was found, however, I will leave this topic open. Ya'll play nice now. -
lowlymarine, the DMCA doesn't care whether or not you are actually violating the copyright, it only cares if you are circumventing technology designed to protect content. Regardless though, since this is a patch from Blizzard, yeah, it's a non-issue in this case. The DMCA is a piece of crap legislation IMO, but at least for now, it is the circumventing of the technology in the first place that is illegal; the issue of copyright is immaterial as the crime comes before the issue of copyright is even raised.

The latest patch v1.12A allows you to play D2 with NO CD.
Blizzard even tells you how to copy the files from the CD to your HD. So this thread is fine.
Using third-party cracks just risks viruses and malware going into your system. Also discussion of that sort is against forum rules.

Yup, completely. I don't think anyone is disagreeing with that anymore.
