hey i just installed Diablo 2 because i havent played it in ages and wanted to give it another go. The problem is when i open it and go to play it the game doesnt respond till like 5-10 minutes later...Its quite annoying especially if im lookking forward to playing it but have to wait that long to be able to do so. So can anyone help me out here?
Thanks

I assume all of the compatibility options for XP are enabled or UAC is disabled altogether. The original game minus the expansion refused to work on my XP machine so you really need the expansion as well to guarantee the game to play.
-
Ive got the expansion, sorry failed to mention that Oo. Also one more thing my FPS are at a constant 25, never higher or lower.
-
can you play at a resolution higher than 800x600 ?
-
-
resolution isnt a problem, i mean i can play it but i have to wait up to 10 minutes for it to startup :/

Go to the blizzard store, create an account, and register your copy of Diablo 2. You can download it from blizzard. The downloadable version works fine with Vista.
You are patched up to 1.12 right? -
ah ok that may be my problem...i havent patched up at all.
-
-
Because i didnt think about patching before.
-
Yeah D2/D2x and Vista don't play nice without the latest patches. I play in Direct3D mode and get 60 fps constantly, dunno.
-
Ok ive patched it all up but no difference. It still takes like 10 minutes to startup and has a steady 25 FPS.
-
Yeah it took like 10 minutes for me too. With the latest patch you don't need the disk anymore so you should try installing it if you haven't already?

I downloaded my copy from blizzard by registering my cd key, after I installed the game + expansion + patches it runs perfect on Vista Ultimate x64, and if there was any real compatability issues to be found I am sure it would be in 64bit and not 32bit, so I can assure you the problem is something deeper.
runs fine only 800x600 max tho :/ I have vsync on but without it id probably get like 500fps -
Mines Vista 32bit
so i dunno what it is. Maybe ill try installing it through blizzard, didnt know you could do that. If it helps i have an M1530 with 2G RAM, 2ghz and a 8600M GT DDR3.

Did you copy over the music .mpq's so you could run it without the disk? Other than that, no idea...
-
my copy works perfectly fine all did was play about with compatablility settings on the icon then it worked fine.

Try to download a glide wrapper to play D2 smoothly. Diablo2 was one of the games that best utilized the Glide technology back in the day.
I use zeckensack's glide wrapper with D2 in Vista 64 and it works beautifully. Hope this helps. -
I downloaded Diablo II and LoD from Blizzard's site and they work perfectly under Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I didnt even have to set up any compatibility modes or anything.

Im using direct 3d for mine. It gave me 2 choices for mode, direct 3d and something else and direct 3d was recomended so thats what I used.
I dont think it would matter much at 800x600 on an old game, any new system could run it in any format and get good fps. -
Diablo 2 actually runs on 25 fps so I don't think it can get higher than that. There are also some occasions in D2 where you get lag no matter how good your computer is.

I have D2 with LoD running fine on my laptop with Vista HP 32bit. You must be doing something wrong ;P
-
No matter what PC you have, when in the minion battle before Baal, you get lag, tried it even on a quad OCed to 3.0 and dual 8800 GTXs...
-
-
Actually, I wouldn`t call it lag. The game like stops for a second or so. Cannot explain it, but I have moved on from getting irritated by it to just knowing it`s going to happen

Lag is a connection delay when 2 or more computers are interacting over a network. It has nothing to do with stutterings and slowdowns -
With all of the news about the Diablo 3 announcement I went and got the Diablo boxed set (I lost my original Diablo 2 key with time). I remember reading something about registering with Blizzard to get the downloadable version from Blizzard but I am not finding the link. The store doesn't have anything (obviously) listed so am I just missing it or are they not doing it anymore?

http://www.blizzard.com/account/
It is down right now, but I assume it will be back up. It allows you to register your game key numbers with Blizzard. After you have them registered with your account, you can pretty much throw the boxes, disks, and keys away, as long as you remember your username and password you will always have access to the game. You just download it from their website, install it, and play. -
Windows Vista, Basic troubleshooting
After installing the game on a Windows Vista system and trying to run it for the first time, you are likely to get a message similar to:
This program has known compatibility issues
To fix this please patch the game using the latest patch. You can download and run the stand-alone patch from our patches page at http://www.blizzard.com/patches. You will only need the latest full patch for the game. This will contain all previous information from previous patch updates.
Our games will only work correctly when run with an administrator account. To do this with Vista, please Right-click on the game icon and then select Run As Administrator from the pop-up menu that appears. This will allow the game to run in Administrator mode.
If that does not allow you to run the game, please make sure you set the game to Windows XP SP 2 compatibility mode.
1. Right click on the Game icon.
2. Select "Properties"
3. Click on the "Compatibility" tab
4. Select "Windows XP SP2"
5. Click "OK"
If you are still having problems after performing these steps, please contact Technical Support for further assistance.
