If a weapon has a certain DPS rating, but then also has a +50-100 damage attribute, is that already factored into the big highlighted DPS figure, or no?
I figured it would have been, but I was comparing some weapons and now I'm not sure.

No it's not counted in the dps, just like a ring that adds 5-7dmg doesn't have 6dps.
-
Damage scales with attack speed
-
Yes. Add a damage jewel to a socketed weapon and see the dps increase. You can also compare the same weapon type with and without additional damage.

I've got a slightly wider range of answers than I would have liked:
1x "no"
1x "doesn't get the question"
1x "yes"
:/
Anyone know for sure? -
I think its not added yet. There's no point of putting it as attribute if it is already included in the dps shown. That's my guess.
Like what was mentioned above, that attribute can work the same as the ones we see in rings and amulets.

Kinda off topic but as it relates to weapon usage I figured I would ask here. I only played for about an hour last night, but is there even a way to attack with a melee weapon? After I assigned spells to left and right click on my witch doctor, I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to fire my freaking bow...
-
i play as demon hunter and can only use bows.
i really dont think it factors into the main number i would say its extra -

I think it IS included. Put a ruby in a weapon socket and your DPS goes up
-
DPS is your base damage. The stats that follow are + bonus/added to your base damage.
In other words. Dagger with 500 DPS, +100-256 Arcane Damage. You are doing 500 + 100-256 damage. -

Pretty sure its included just from the patterns I see.
I notice weapons with +10% attack speed are always faster than similar weapons without that modifier under its attack speed tooltip.
Likewise + damage weapons seem to be higher dps than weapons similar without.
The stuff that is not included is character dded things like +100 str will not show on the weapons tooltip I think, but will make your hero do more dps. -
But why put something like that attribute IF it is already included in the base weapon DPS. Might as well remove the attribute since it's already incorporated in the base DPS.
These are just my thoughts of it, I'm still looking for a real proof though.
Edit:
Take this weapon for example.
Max = 345
Min = 159
Ave = 252
Atk Speed = 1.4 Atks /Sec
DPS = 252*1.4 = 352.8 DPS = equal to the base DPS
Base DPS should not include any attributes below like fire damage, +% damage, dps from intellect etc.
Those attributes will be added to the overall DPS of the character which will be on top of the base weapon DPS.Attached Files:

but regardless of if it is or isn't included in the weapon dps, the way that i see how good a weapon is, is to open my inventory screen and look at total damage attribute. This is how i can tell if the current weapon is better than my previous one

I edited my post (#12). I put an example.

I think blizzard needs to explain this stat thing... Sometimes its confusing..

A similar question, but unrelated. Does anyone know how dual-wielding dps works? If I throw on a really strong sword in my main hand, then a weaker sword in my offhand, sometimes my dps actually DECREASES (especially if the weaker weapon is significantly weaker). If it does increase, it's often by a TINY amount (like 10%). Seems very strange to me.
Can someone enlighten me, or at least verify that finding so i know im not going crazy. Doesnt make any sense that your dps could actually go down by equipping a second weapon, regardless of its damage. -

I tried to look for something newer after the release but no luck. Please simplify it to us -
I think + damage is not included in the DPS. When you search on AH and sort by DPS, sometimes you will see that lower DPS is on top of higher DPS weapon because the lower DPS weapon has perfect ruby socketed.
-
For socketed items, you will see the dps go up once you put the gem. But for additional attributes, its not included. Because you can verify by computing the dps based on the damage range and speed if it matches with the base dps of the weapon as displayed.

it sucks that we don't have a consensus on this and that we don't have any sources / references here to rely on.
I also want to know how special ability damage is calculated. does it rely on the base DPS or base damage? -
The dps shown on your screen is based on weapon damage, primary stat, crit chance and damage, and added damage from rings/amulets (which is added to base weapon damage, which is why it is so good). -
I realized that I should have inserted a weapon with a + damage and not a +” elemental” damage. Then check if the based dps shown in the weapon is going to match the math. I don't think the logic is wrong, I should just have used a different weapon as example.
If based on a correct weapon sample, the dps math matches the display, then there is a good chance that the damage is NOT included in the dps.
Your example doesn't give a better proof. It doesn't always mean that something with +2-4 will have smaller dps than another weapon with a +2-5 damage attributes. Because attributes is randomly created.
Like what I said, I'm guessing too, but I'm trying to come up with something that can be verified like providing a computation. If I have to choose, between yours and my explanation, I think mine had more merit than your observation.
I don't mean any harm, I just feel like your guess is as good as mine unless you can provide a better explanation.
Anyway, I think I have an idea on how to test and check whether its included or not. I'll give it a try when I get back and update. I'm on a holiday get-away so no d3 until sunday -
Allow me to allay the confusion in this thread.
Diablo 3 - How a Weapon's DPS is Calculated - YouTube
Enjoy. -
Good video, thanks for that. Any damage on your weapon is treated the same in terms of dps, it does not matter if it is elemental or just damage.
When I said compare weapons, it should have been obvious that you should compare the same base weapon. PS I wasn't guessing, just hard to explain typing on the phone. I really would have like to reply with some pictures, but too busy playing. -
So my guess is really wrong :
This is exactly the explanation that I hope to see. Thanks again! -

yeah that was perfect. good work, team.

Welcome to Blizzard RPGs. WoW has been out for 7 years and there still isn't consensus on how crits are rolled.
