I am just curious as to what exactly is the difference between the graphics cards of these two laptops:

    Which has:

    Compared to this model:

Acer V3-571G Core i5 Windows 8 Laptop in Black - Acer Direct

    Which has:

Any idea what is the difference between the two, and which is better?

    Thanks in advance!

From what I can see, exactly the same video card configuration-- both models should be able to switch to Intel HD 4000 for non-demanding applications but only one item description bothered to mention that. The difference is in hard drive capacity and optical drive.

those specs might be trying to say one has Optimus Technology and other doesn't.. Now if you want high battery timings, go with Optimus ( one with intel HD 4000 on it )

No such variations exist. Just the result of non-standardized item descriptions.

So you do want to play games ;) Then let's look more carefully at your choices so far.

At this price level one could not expect fantastic performance but yes, medium/low settings can be achieved for most games on these laptops. In terms of absolute performance, I will refer you to the magical (albeit it occasionally outdated/inaccurate) Notebookcheck gaming database.

Don't lose your head when choosing between the 15R and 15R SE: the best graphics is actually the SE's 7730M instead of the 8730M found on some of the 15R configurations. The numbers were chosen to be misleading!

Just looking at a few other choices for you:

    1. If you don't mind the 17'' size: Inspiron 17R SE with GT 650M- £570

    2. If your budget allows, Samsung 550P5C with GT 650M- £650

PS: Sorry I ended up recommending two models with GT 650M but that's really the minimum I would expect from a gamer's perspective..

    Thanks for the reply!

So in your opinion is the Inspiron 15R a better choice than the Acer Aspire V3-571G I linked in the OP? I've heard the Acer Aspire V3-571G offers very good performance for it's price, but it's design is a bit meh. Not sure about the Inspiron 15R.

Also I can't seem to find an Inspiron 15R SE with a 7730M graphics card on a UK sight?

You might've noticed my signature and realised that I do have a 15R as a portable/work alternative. I am personally very satisfied with the product as it does all I need it to do: fit in a bag and run basic softwares. Objectively speaking though, the build quality just screams cheap. Rather shocking screen flexure under torsion and loosely fitted optical drive, just to name a few issues. In addition, my 15R is able to have very pleasant temperatures only because it does not have any dedicated graphics cards. A 15R with dGPU is probably going to be much warmer or louder.

That's strange. The link you posted at first for the 15R SE led to a config with 7730M, UK site too.

As always, take as long as you can afford to choose.. maybe the price would come down or your coffers would get fuller in the meantime :D

Lastly, if buying from Dell, be sure to either order from a sales rep on the phone and ask for discounts, or register yourself on quidco (or some other cashback site) for their discount coupons (usually around 10%) + 2-5% cashback.

I haven't seen that Dell Inspiron 15R SE before, it looks pretty good! Downsides are it seems to be on the heavy side and no colour option and may be prone to overheating - but can't have everything.

I'm wondering whether it will be sufficiently superior to this one:

    Acer Aspire V3-571G Windows 8 Core i5 Laptop - Black NX.RZJEK.010 - Acer Direct

    To warrant the extra £90.

Just looking at the facts, the difference is £83. Secondly with Dell cashback+discount, you'll close that gap down to maybe £25-30.

That particular config of 15R SE has a processor that's exactly one notch better, i.e. 0.1 GHz faster all around, not a big deal. The 7730M should be considerably better than 630M though: which is better AMD Radeon HD 7730m or Nvidia 630m GT???

Another point to consider is that if the laptop has a problem, Dell sends a repairman to your home (supposedly the next day) whereas for Acer you'll probably have to send it in.

Yes, the 15R SE seems to be the best bet. The laptop needing repairing is something I am concerned about, I didn't know Dell offered that service.

My last query is - how does the discount/cashback thing work? The 15R SE laptop is currently £499 (there is a £579 version as well), I think that has already been discounted from £649.

Quidco - The UK's No.1 Cashback & Voucher Codes Site

On that website, search for Dell and you get presented with a selection of voucher codes plus a range of cashback rates for different products. The maximum discount is 11% for all computers and maximum cashback for Inspirons I've seen is about 4%. Wait around a few days for a good deal to pop up.

The discount is applied to the price tag instantly, if used at the Dell checkout stage on an applicable product. The cashback will take a few weeks at least to find its way into your bank account. I should stop blowing quidco's trumpet now though before it starts to sound like I work there.
