I understand that an emulation layer will be needed in order for dx9 video cards to render directx 10 graphics.
So my question is, what kind of performance loss are we looking at here compared to a dx10 equivalent card?
-
Probably quite a bit, but the whole hype about dx10 is all its new features, not how well it can be rendering by older cards.
-
I understand that, but I want to know if my x1600 is going to be able to play directx 10 games without trouble. I don't want to find myself on my knees when new games come out.
-
Oh! Well if you mean that, DX9 cards cant support dx10 ( i think) but all dx10 games coming probably would include dx9 support, like dx9 games support dx8 and 7, so there should be no problem

The market shift from DX9 to DX10 won't be for a while. There are too many people with DX9 cards for the game companies to just switch that quickly. Doing so would be a huge hit on their incomes, as the only buyers for the games would be the small percentage of people who do have DX10 cards.
Don't worry, with an x1600, DX10 will just be hitting its prime when its time for you to upgrade due to the whole notebook becoming "slow" and outdated. It is a great card, and will definitely hold its own for awhile. -
Yeah, and especially considering the time it'll take for DX 10 cards to come in reasonably priced laptops (and I don't mean any integrated graphic cards either), it'll be a loooong time before you have to worry.
-
Right. DX9 cards cannot do any of the DX10 effects. But earlier DX10 games will have some DX9 backwards-compatibility. I think it will be some time before game makers start cutting out DX9 card owners from their target market.

Thanks, good to hear.
DirectX 10 - Too much hype?
