Haven't heard about that package but if you wait, there is a DirectX 9.L coming which will work on XP and is supposedly an equivalent to DX10.

Yes, there is no technical reason why DX10 won't work on XP, unlike DX10.1. I believe it's been discussed in the forums before, but regardless a simple google search is enlightening, as always ;) .

Actually if I recall correctly, DirectX 9L is what is natively incorporated into Vista to run the Aero GUI.....

The L in 9.L stands for Longhorn so I think you are right.

    However, I saw this:
"DirectX 9.0 L is simply a renamed and refurbished DirectX 10 for Windows XP."

    EDIT:
Scrap that, an article on the same site says otherwise.

No chance in heck DX10 can run on XP... The sake of Vista depends on it.

I heard they were porting dx10 over to XP sometime. The sake of Vista doesn't really depend on dx10, only in the gaming community probably, what about those other thousands of businesses which use/are going to use Vista, they don't really care about dx10.

But they aren't going to upgrade to Vista any time soon anyway.
DirectX10 is just about the only reason for home users to upgrade.
Businesses take years to upgrade no matter what, so from the point of view of Vista adoption, they're not a factor.

That said, it doesn't seem like MS is going to port it to XP. Why would they? And they've never said they were going to do so. What you've heard is just wistful thinking.

    It's the inq. Nuff' said.

Yep. DX9L is the Vista version of DX9.

Depends on what you mean by possible.
Would it be possible to implement DX10 on XP? Yes, of course. Is it currently possible to use DX10 on XP? Nope.
Is Microsoft going to make a DX10 version for XP? Doubt it.

Why don't you ask him then? ;)

Developers have access to software-based DX10 implementations running on XP. The DirectX SDK has always had that. You might in theory be able to coax that into playing games, but it'd be slow since it uses software rendering. Don't know if that's what they did.

Anyway, bottomline is, if you want to know what your friend did, or how exactly, you have to ask him, not us.

He's probably talking about the Alky Project. As I said before, Google is your friend ;).

Microsoft will never support it. There is some company I believe that is trying to port DirectX10 to XP. Its not really a solution, as its more like a DX10 emulation on DX9. So, all the hardware features of DX10 does not really work well.

DX10 isnt all that it is cracked up to be at the moment, especially for the mobile community. The only cards that can run DX10 in all their glory are top end desktop cards. 1 year or so down the line, it may be different. By then, Vista should be better, so if your that concerned, upgrade to vista later on, once games start being built from the ground up to support dx10 in a big way. Right now, dx10 provides some more eye candy. Nothing mind blowing. This will change at some point. The DX10 in Crysis and World in Conflict are just starting to show some of the cool effects possible

It's technically possible yes, The Alky project is working on it, and I believe they released a beta of it just recently, or are doing so soon.

    So the answer is....Maybe!

    ahem.....

DirectX 10 will be out on XP by 2008.

Two sources that are working on it (with results already):

    1) Alky Project
    - already has a DX10 alpha for XP... is about to release a full functional DX10 demo in XP.

    2) (like stated before) DX10 is do-able on Windows XP .... by Nvidia.
    - Microsoft backpedals to make DX10 memory virtualisation optional... so that Nvidia can bring DX10 to XP for the masses that do not want to go to Vista.... which is A LOT of people. Go figure. for those that do not want the bells and whistles, but wants better gaming performance with less requirements of resources. (sound familiar??? ... think Windows ME-II) :D

Oh damn, I hadn't heard about the Nvidia thing, so that's two fronts working on, sweet. Now I can get rid of Vista on my lappy and my dual boot on my desktop :)

Heres to one of those working, and MS not doing something to stop it.
