AnandTech | DirectX 12 to Be Unveiled At GDC 2014
But will Kepler and Maxwell GPUs be compatible?
-
Windows 8 DLC
-
not sure that maxwell is DX 12 compatible.. at all
-
Yeah but just like how DirectX 10.x GPUs can run some features of DirectX 11.x (like multi-threaded optimisations) but not hardware features like tessellation, I hope that Kepler and Maxwell GPUs could run some features of the new API. Hopefully it will focus on low-level optimisations (like Mantle) and that surely wouldn't need new hardware to benefit from performance improvements (just like how Mantle supported GCN 1.0 as well as GCN 1.1). The Xbox One supports D3D_11.2 feature level in hardware, I can't think that Microsoft would not ensure compatibility between the headline features of the new API and their shiny new console baby.

It's going to be announced and what features it will include, but it's still some way off AFAIK, certainly the next gen chips wont be DX12.
-
I would expect Kepler and any other DX 11.2 to be compatible with DX12. DX 12 I would guess will be more about low level access improvements than hardware features. I don't think anyone would argue hardware features need improvement rather software. Plus DX11 hardware features were failures. Seems to be more about improving performance, especially since Qualcomm will be one of the presenters.
Also I would expect it would be something that the XBox One can use. Makes no sense to release new API when their console released just few months ago will be unable to use it and obselete. Doesn't make sense to do that.
But I would expect it to be a Windows 8.1 exclusive, which is fine by me since it's the best OS I've used so far.Cakefish likes this. -
Mantle had a good run.
DirectX 12 will be a great contribution and may actually make a difference with my next SLI notebook that may be too powerful for the CPU
I am also pretty sure it can be run on Kepler as well as Maxwell. Its just a software. It shouldnt have any limitations to newer hardware if coded right. -
I really hope the improvements are significant and great and exclusive to Windows 8.1. I will laugh to read the Windows 8.1 whiners slowly upgrading to Win 8.1 to take advantage of the improvements. But knowing their irrational hate for W8.1, I doubt they will upgrade, will also be hilarious.
-
It may actually be enough to force me to adapt to Windows 8. I hate to admit it :/

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Who cares?!? Long live DirectX 9!

Did you really need to create yet another thread for this?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...cards/746304-m-khronos-responding-mantle.html -
Ohhh I didn't notice that thread. I just scanned all the tread titles looking for 'DirectX 12' and didn't see any so assumed I was the first to post this news.
Hmmm... but I would hope that the juicy bits of DX12 (low-level optimisations and performance improvements) would be backwards-compatible with DX11 hardware.
Yeah, I suppose in any case we won't be seeing it in games for some time yet. Released most probably alongside Windows 9 next year and then several years before it becomes the de facto standard. Like how DX11 is only just being fully implemented in games this year, 5 years after it was made available. Although that was due to the over-reliance on seriously outdated 7th gen console hardware, hopefully the transition won't take as long this time around if Microsoft make the Xbox One DX12 compatible.
Yeah Windows 8.1 is a fantastic OS except for the Metro interface, which can be easily avoided and bypassed 99% of the time on desktop.
So evil really does exist in this world... -
While I laugh as it will be exclusive to Windows 9 only, bringing back Windows 7 legacy... MS will ditch Win 8 as quickly as they can. Win 9 will be here about this time next year... Gives developers a chance to update their hardware for Win 9 and DX12.octiceps likes this.

So announce DX12 now, but we won't be able to use it for a year? That doesn't seem right. I say dlc for 8.1.

No benefit for current games???in terms of performance?
-
Sure why not? The presentation is probably just detailing and touting their "plan" for implementation and features. Probably in reaction to Mantle. I'm sure DirectX 12 has been in development for a little while, but Mantle probably just kicked them in the rear to not lose market share. DirectX 11 came out in 2009. Other than minor updates, it has remained stagnant. That's what happens when there's no competition. It may very well be patched into Win 8.1 but MS tends to like to bundle new versions with new OS's, like DirectX 10 with Vista, DirectX 11 with Windows 7.
-
Yes, it could take a year to come out. But I am hoping I guess, that MS see Mantle as enough threat that they don't want Mantle to start gaining market share. After all, if it succeeds, then it could push Nvidia to do something simular. And by the time Directx comes out, there could be Mantle 2.0. Not to mention, hopefully MS has learned from consoles not to let a different developer have a year lead in the market.
Any one seen a chart showing Directx announcement dates compared to actual shipping dates? -
I was hoping it would push nvidia to something and we could all just ignore microsoft completely at some point down the road.
-
For as long as we game primarily on Windows there can be no ignoring of Microsoft.
-
Only 2 days more. I`m gonna watch the live stream for sure.
March 20th, 10 AM PDT. Set your clocks guys -
If the Xbox One is gonna have DX 12, Maxwell will
-
So would Kepler and Fermi.
-
How do you figure? DX12 takes a page out of Mantle's book and it's AMD GCN not Nvidia hardware that's in the Xbox One.
-
it means they are willing to support current gen gpus alias Kepler and GCN
I dont think they will start to develop it (or started to dev) in 2014

Am i missing something here or? Microsoft is doing nothing but announcing the details of Direct-X 12, It's not going to be released for what i would imagine a pretty long time. I mean what's the point of releasing something when both AMD and Nvidia just launched their new Graphics Processor series, that as far as we know will not support it. I've never heard of a Direct-X being launched that worked on graphics processors that where launched without it natively supported.
If they are, I assure you it has been in the works for a while with the Xbox One and Hardware Vendors... It's not like you just wake up one day and say, "Hey we're launching Direct-X next week, even though nothing supports it lets do it anyway!" -
Like what sasuke256 says, if they support GCN in the Xbox One, it shows that DX12 is backwards-compatible (at least to a certain extent), which means that all DX11 cards are likely to benefit
Even Maxwell 28nm is 'only' feature level 11_0 compatible. So any benefits to Maxwell that DX12 provides will naturally support Kepler and Fermi too. -
Why can`t DX launch in the upcoming months? Why would it take a long time?
Why can`t existing Maxwell cards support DX12? What determine if a architecture supports the DX12, the hardware or the software? -
afaik, DirectX is purely a software spec and it's up to the hardware manufacturers to implement the API. Which means pretty much any GPU can be updated to supported DX12 on a driver level, but there will be practical limitations (e.g. performance, image quality and most importantly, R&D time and money).
So it doesn't really make sense to say 'if X GPU architecture will support DX12, so will Y GPU architecture' since it's entirely up to AMD/Nvidia/etc. to implement the spec. Just because a GPU can theoretically be updated to support DX12 doesn't mean it actually will be.octiceps likes this. -

Basically all currently supported GPUs will be compatible, how many would be compliant though I think is just the generation after maxwell.

Link please?

IGN is said to have a live stream. Not sure if its true though.
But Anandtech and PCper will surely have a live blog updated every minute with pictures and stuff.Mr Najsman likes this. -
43 minutes to go until they start

Keep us updated cloud. I'm at work and can't exactly stream.
Beamed from my G2 Tricorder -
Its not stream. It is a blog where they update us every minute or two.
But ya, will try to post something now and then

SEE I TOLD YOU FERMI AND KEPLER WOULD BE SUPPORTED! I TOLD YOU! WOOHOO!
Sorry about the capital letters, but I'm rather pleased at this news.
EDIT: Oh noes, late 2015? D: Eh, well better than nothing. Hopefully I'll have Maxwell by that time too! The future is bright for PC!Cloudfire likes this. -
supported by kepler fermi and maxwell
and the winner is ?

I also was positive that Nvidia would support DX12 despite some trolls that should not be named here tried to say different...
Preview and "early access" later this year. I guess that means we get to play around with it in some games
Everyone yay.
"Microsoft declined to say if Windows 7 would support DirectX 12"
Don`t hold your breath though. If its one thing that can move their broken Windows 8, it is this.. For better and for worse -

So, how does this affect Mantle?
DirectX 12 is here!
