It could be Windows 9 exclusive. The timing of release matches up with the rumours of the Windows 9 release window.

From msdn blog.
Looks like they ported 3DMark11 to 3DMark12 (lol) and the CPU used 50% less time displaying that frame. That is very impressive and Mantle only saw similar gains with Multiplayer.
3DMark11 using DX11
3DMark11 using DX12
Another cool thing is that Nvidia used only a few people to port Forza from DX11 to DX12 and make it playable on the GTX Titan. This could mean that some developers might not need much effort and resources to re-release games on DX12 or even port games from consoles to PC and DX12. Would love to see some this year

There's been some clarification regarding DX12 support on current GPU's from AMD and Nvidia. All AMD GCN-based GPU's and all Nvidia DX11-class GPU's (Fermi, Kepler, Maxwell) will support lower-level abstraction but not the full DX12 spec. Meaning some DX12 features will still require next-gen GPU hardware. So far, Microsoft has mentioned only two DX12 features that will need new hardware: new blend modes and something called conservative rasterization, which can apparently help with object culling and hit detection (I think they mean collision detection
). But there may be more that are yet to be announced.
DirectX 12 will also add new features for next-gen GPUs - The Tech Report
I thought it was too good to be true that DX12 in its entirety would be available on our current GPU's and it turns out that is indeed wishful thinking. New versions of DirectX have always required new hardware to enable all features; it's always been that way. New D3D_FEATURE_LEVEL 12 functionality won't be available to us unless we upgrade, but the fact that DX12 will be partially supported on current cards makes it feel a lot like the transition from DX10 to DX11. If you recall, DX11 was build strictly as a superset of DX10/10.1, meaning DX11 code and games could run just fine on DX10/10.1 hardware but only implementing some new features such as multi-threading while omitting others such as tessellation and compute shaders. -

The object culling sounds really important. After all, DX12 is focused on performance, right? -

Trust me, I grew up playing Halo PC and have devoted hundreds if not thousands of hours to it and Halo CE mods and I'd love for it to return to the PC as much as the next guy. But it looks like that's never gonna happen at this rate and it still rankles me to this day.TBoneSan likes this. -

They should just adopt the model of bringing old Xbox/360/One games to PC a generation later via HD Collection type things.
However, it's more difficult (apparently) than one would imagine. They can't even get the HD Collections right. Master Chief Collection is a mess. Even after the latest patch, the only thing that functions correctly is the ranked H2 Anniversary collection. The campaign co-op is an insane lag fest full of glitches. I went through all 4 Halo games on co-op. Multiple times had to restart levels when we were almost to the end due to glitches/lag drops. Then you have to start the whole level over because only in SP can you start from checkpoints.
Attrocious. So if they brought Halo MCC to PC, I would hope it came with mod support. At least then the mods could somewhat fix the game. Halo 1 PC by Gearbox was an awful mess as well. The darn game lagged on LAN! -
Windows 10 will be coming out in the summer. I wonder if any autumn/winter games will utilise DirectX 12.

Did anyone successfully tried Dx12 Feature Test while being in Optimus with Ivy Bridge HD4000 and earlier?

Hey! My 650M supports Dx12 on practice now!
You need to use latest 352.84 WHQL Nvidia drivers and updated 3DMark-v1-5-893

And? Do you get the 20% more performance promised by DX12 ?

Damn. I thought the use of DX12 would enhance older DX11 games by automagically using the newer API. Would have been nice if all these games from 2009-2015 could be played with higher FPS. Wrong conclusion, I guess. It obviously means these older games need to deliver a DX12 patch first - which is very unlikely to happen

DirectX 12 is here!
