Do you mean the game sort of speeds up for a second and then settles back down. I have had this problem a couple of times, definately with the 275.xx beta driver. Not so sure about the latest offical release i think the issue is reduced.

FPS is unaffected and remains high i.e. >50

(I am using an MSI with 460m)

Set single display mode and power management to prefer maximum
    Performance under NVCP/3d Settings.
The go into My Documents\my games\dirt 3 and delete the "hardware..." folder and try again.
Drivers wise 275.27/33 are ok with it.

    Nvcp=nvidia control panel.
Right click on desktop man lol, i think that its vital to know what is nvcp, it lets you tweak your gpu.

yeah i figured that out, changed it to the specs u told me, and the game reacted the same... it kind of pisses me off to know i dropped 50 bucks on a game that lags, which i know very well my laptop can handle it...

Yeah, what are you saying? That you're getting low framerates at high settings, or is there something just messed up about how the game runs?

If you are using the 275.* drivers that might be the problem. For me the game works fine in the beginning but after minutes it starts lagging due to the GPU downclocking for no reason. My temps are ~78C.
Switched back to 267.* drivers and solved the issue.

Nope. All sales are final on Steam and any other digital distributor you buy from.

Are you on Windows 7 64bit?
Check if your steam client is running in Compatibility mode by itself.... seems to have helped some people on the codemasters forum with stuttering.....

Well, ehh, if you email STEAM and practically beg for a refund because the game does not work, *THEY MIGHT* give you a refund as a "one-time gesture of good will".

Up this point you got another last chanche to make it work.

    Download the official WHQL 275.33.
    Download Driver Sweeper.

Unistall Nvidia Video Driver in Add Remove app (control panel).
DONT REBOOT IF IT ASK TO DO SO!

    Launch Driver Sweeper.
Select from the start panel Nvidia Chipset and Nvidia Display.
Hit Analyze, then after it finds the values, hit CLEAN.

When it asks for reboot, do so.
After the reboot, Windows should find a new video adapter but it will fail to install the drivers for it.

    Launch WHQL 275.33 setup.
    Accept the Agreement.
    Select Customize Installation.
Uncheck all the options, check only:
    Nvidia Update
    Nvidia Driver
Nvidia HDMI Sound (if you use it otherwise keep it unchecked).
ANYTHING ELSE (nview,3d Vision Controller and Driver) NEED TO BE UNCHECKED!
    Check "Perform Clean Installation".
    Proceed with the driver installation.
    Reboot.

Now after the reboot,go into NVCP.
Set the options i mentioned before (single display/maximum performance).
    Go into My Documents\My Games\Dirt 3.
    Delete the folder HARDWARE SETTINGS.

Launch the game and hopefully youre problems are sorted.
Remember that some cards have problem with some specific AA. I advice to put the game in Ultra (use the preset under Graphic Options) while keeping the AA at 4xAA.

I know its a long trip but it should fix all your problems.

First of all, you should use 275.33 for sure. But original dirver from Nvidia website most probably will not work :) so you need modified inf which you can find laptopvideo2go.com, in ultra setting @1366*768 pls see below benchmark result which I got
This score has been taken with GTX 460M 825/1650/1600 Overclocked and i72630qm during game play max temp 85C

Uninstall ALL Drivers and install the newest again ( starting from chipset driver and then installing -->; cpu driver; sound driver; graphics driver...)

Are you getting the lags only in Dirt3 or also in other games?
Have you input lags or real FPS drops = >30?

Dirt 3 runs inconsistent for me on my desktop. I hold pretty steady frames, but every other race it runs either 45fps or 60fps. I can do the exact same race twice, but it wont run the same frame rate. The races alternate between 45 and 60fps.
