    Hello everyone,

I have recently started playing a graphic intensive game again. Whenever I play this game on full screen mode (lowest settings) my screen goes black, and I get the error message "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered". I have installed the latest drivers on my computer. My specs should allow me to play the game on max settings without any trouble. My computer is a gateway p-7915u, the specs are-

Intel Core 2 Duo processor P8700 2.53 ghz
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 260m
    320 gb HDD
    4 gb ram

As far as I can tell it is not an overheating problem, and I tried changing the registry but that did not help. If there is any solution to this that might work, please let me know.

which driver did you load as the last 2 released were beta's
might be worth trying an older driver.
tbh the best one i ever used over the last 3 years was the whql 186.81

also when you updated the graphics driver did you do it in safe mode with driver cleaner or cc cleaner

I didn't do either. I just downloaded the driver and had the nvidia software do it. Should I reinstall the driver using one of those programs?

Try reinstalling and select the clean install option by doing a custom install. That way you will remove previous nVidia software. If that doesn't do the trick, uninstall, run driver sweeper in safe mode reboot then reinstall.

and if you dont know about modding the inf then search the official nvidia drivers page NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search

a lot of us old skool wont use the auto detect and do it the old fasioned way :)

download new driver and save to desktop
delete old driver in add/remove in control panel
reboot into safe mode and run driver sweeper/cleaner or cc cleaner or both.
reboot to desktop and load new drivers
    reboot and your done.

Right, I'll try re-installing the drivers now. What exactly is modding the drives and what does it do? The four links that Patrck posted didn't work for me, so I could not access them, and I have no idea what modding the inf means.

The driver not responding means the driver crashed. That can also happen because of thermal protection... how hot is your card running at the time? How do you know it's not an overheating problem?

And what game is it? Does it happen with other games, or just that one?

No, it never goes black without displaying the message. I sometimes feel like it does that, but I think my game might just be overlapping the message so that I can't see it. I installed the drivers, making sure I deleted the old ones, and I thought that had fixed it, but I just got the error message again. My temperatures at about 59-64 degrees centigrade. The only time it hit's about 90+ is when I'm playing crysis. I monitor the temps using HWMonitor. When I get the message, my graphics card temperature rises about one degree each time. I'm not sure how far it will go up, since it hit 64 degrees before the messages stopped. The game is Perfect World International. I believe I get the message with other games as well, but it's less.

if its not super inconvient you should reinstall your os and install a proper driver. if it still happens then its your gpu.

if the screen goes black and it is not the drivers issue (ie no message) it means your gpu just restarted, i had that happen a while back to my 4870 before it broke.

Well, I studied it more closely this time, and it seems like my screen goes black a lot of times without displaying the message. However, sometimes it still does display the message.

Last time i got that message, my gpu was overheating and eventually burned out, and this happened to 2 of my gpu's in my olf laptop.

You overclocked your card ? I've been getting this for yrs and just have to live with it really.. It happens mostly with games based on the Unreal Engine. Default clocks works like a charm.

No OS or driver reinstall ain't gonna do ****. Don't waste your time
