I should be getting my new notebook on monday or tuesday (finally!), and I'm gonna be trying out all my old games on it to see how they run. However, I left many of the CDs for these games at home and I'm in my dorm at college, so is it possible for me to simply copy all the files for a given game onto my external HD off of my old desktop and then load them all onto the notebook HD and expect them to work? I doubt it, I imagine there are various registry files that the installation process changes or something, but it'd be a hell of a lot easier! I suppose it also depends on the game...

It depends on the game really, you're right that for newer games, you'll likely have to reinstall.
